Dream debut by Edwards helps West Indies level series

Fidel Edwards: a dream debut

ScorecardThe real West Indies finally stood up to be counted again as they levelled the five-match series with a 72-run win in a rain-affected match at Harare. Their comfortable win was down to three magnificent individual performances, top of which was Fidel Edwards, who took the best-ever figures by a debutant with 6 for 22. He blew away the top order as Zimbabwe limped to 150 for 7 in their pursuit of 223 from 32 overs.Edwards produced a deadly display of swing bowling in an inspired spell which destroyed Zimbabwe’s chances of winning after only seven overs. With his first ball in one-day cricket, he produced a superb swinging yorker which uprooted the middle stump of Barney Rogers (5 for 1). In his second over, with consecutive deliveries, he had Vusi Sibanda caught by Ridley Jacobs, the wicketkeeper, for 7 and then trapped Craig Wishart lbw (10 for 3). Every ball was potentially lethal and the West Indian team had their tails well and truly up.Up to this match Zimbabwe had been outclassed, but performed with honour. Now it was back to the bad old days of abject surrender. Mark Vermeulen failed to get behind a rising delivery from Edwards and lobbed a simple catch off the splice to Shivnarine Chanderpaul at gully. Stuart Matsikenyeri then flicked across the line and sent an easy skier to Corey Collymore at mid-on (22 for 5). Edwards’s opening spell read an astonishing 5-1-10-5 – not bad for your first game. When Edwards came off prematurely due to Brian Lara’s desire to make sure of completing 25 overs in case of more rain, the pressure gradually lifted, though Streak failed to score his usual rescue innings. Instead, Tatenda Taibu played what developed into a sparkling innings of 66, while Sean Ervine joined him in a carefree bash at the end to make 37 not out. But it was all meaningless after Edwards’s dream start. The other two outstanding performances came from the opening pair of Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds. Gayle set the pace with an innings of rare power and brilliance, scoring 51 off 34 balls, while Hinds went on to bat through the innings for his highest one-day score of 127 not out.

After Streak put West Indies in, Zimbabwe’s front-line seamers, Streak and Andy Blignaut, called the tune at the start of the match, as they swung the ball sharply under a cloudy sky. But the luck went West Indies’ way, and Gayle decided to ride it. He began with an amazing six over extra cover off Blignaut, following it next ball with a one-bounce four over long-on. Blignaut lost his cool immediately, the next ball swinging way down the leg side for four wides.Streak had bowled his first four overs for just four runs, but he too wilted under Gayle’s assault, his next two overs conceding 28 runs. Hinds joined in the fun with a six that just cleared the midwicket boundary, but so high that it might well have travelled further vertically than horizontally.Gayle raced to his fifty off only 30 balls, but then suddenly exchanged his broadsword for the unaccustomed rapier and paid the price. Trying to dab Ervine through the vacant slips, he was brilliantly caught by Taibu for 51. It was the 16th over and West Indies had already amassed 96 for the loss of only one wicket.Lara came to the crease and as soon as Ray Price came on, Lara looked to target him, hitting him for the longest six of the day over long-on. But in Gary Brent’s next over, Lara fell in a similar fashion to Gayle, for 14, trying to dab a ball through the slips and edging an easier catch to Taibu (124 for 2).Then came a period of consolidation as Ramnaresh Sarwan, needing to impress after three failures, settled in with Hinds. The rate gradually increased as the partnership developed, and Hinds went on to score his fourth one-day hundred off 127 balls as the sky darkened and rain approached.Sarwan, on 47, holed out to Vermeulen on the cover boundary off Streak (231 for 3), but Hinds continued to step up the pace, ruining Ervine’s impressive figures by plundering 17 off his final over. His 127 surpassed his previous one-day best of 125 not out, but the untimely rain prevented an onslaught in the last five overs.About 90 minutes’ play was lost, and when play restarted Zimbabwe’s target, according to Duckworth-Lewis, was 223 off 32 overs. That was always going to be tricky, but Edwards soon made it impossible. This result left both teams with all to play for tomorrow, the final day of an excellent series – weather permitting.

Newlands clash heads for exciting finish

Western Province continued to dominate on the third day without being ableto turn the knife as Eastern Province came within 100 runs of the hometeam’s score before declaring with one wicket standing. By the close, thehosts had stretched their lead to 150 with nine wickets in hand.Resuming at 197 for 3, debutant Homani continued to impress beforeeventually falling to Harris’s arm ball. Callaghan scored an attracttive 72before being well caught by Duminy, and after some dogged lower orderbatting, Kemp hit an aggressive half-century before Bradfield declared.Munnik, the breakthrough bowler the previous evening, went for 25 in a twoover burst, but it was the spinners who eventually came to the party. Harrisfinished with 3 for 131 in 49 overs, and Adams produced some more controlledbowling to take 2 for 77.Left 15 overs before close of play, Gibbs played some attractive shotsbefore being run out attempting a risky single. After that, Kirsten andTrott saw out time with no further loss.

Wolves must complete Rafa Silva transfer

Wolves have had a fairly solid season so far in Bruno Lage’s debut campaign in charge of the Midlands club, having won 12 of their 26 league games, drawing four and losing 12.

One aspect of their season that could be addressed when the next summer transfer window opens is their lack of goals scored (24) compared to the other teams around them in the top half of the table, with a significant number of clubs in the bottom half of the division also finding the back of the net more times than the Old Gold have.

Specifically, having played in 24 league games, striker Raul Jimenez has only managed to score five goals.

With that in mind, one thing the Molineux outfit could do if their goalscoring fortunes don’t improve by the end of the campaign is look to bring in some extra attacking reinforcements when the transfer window opens for business.

One figure that could spark a bit of life into Lage’s attacking force is Benfica winger Rafa Silva, who has been mentioned with a move to the Midlands club recently.

Having racked up a total of 392 senior appearances for Benfica, Brage and Feirense, the 28-year-old has managed to score 93 goals and provide 66 assists, showing how much of a threat he can be going forward when it comes to scoring and creating goals.

With seven strikes and 15 assists under his belt for his current club so far in this campaign, the Portuguese international has more goal contributions than Jimenez, Hwang Hee-chan and Daniel Podence have managed to deliver in the Premier League combined.

The £25.2m-rated gem has also managed to earn himself an overall performance rating of 7.5/10 from WhoScored, which would also make him the highest-rated player in Lage’s squad by the same metric.

Known as “the Portuguese Eden Hazard,” the Benfica star could be a sensational addition to Wolves’ team if they manage to secure his signature in the coming months.

Looking ahead to the summer transfer window, if the Old Gold receive a suitable transfer fee from Barcelona for Adama Traore and don’t end up signing Francisco Trincao permanently, they could potentially use the money to launch a move for Silva to see if he can replicate the same sort of attacking form that he’s shown in Portugal in the Premier League.

If this were to happen, he could be just what Wolves need to bring a bit of life to their attack and potentially help the likes of Jimenez to get back to scoring goals on a regular basis, creating a deadly forward duo at the same time.

Sri Lanka were never up with the required rate, mainly thanks to Tom Westley who took 3 for 27, and were 12 runs short of the Duckworth-Lewis par when rain brought a premature finish.England will meet Sri Lanka and Pakistan in a triangular series before all three sides head off to Malaysia for the U-19 World Cup.

Shoaib surprised by successful return

Though he last played Test cricket in February 2006, Shoaib Akhtar did not seem in the least rusty on the first day of the Port Elizabeth Test taking 4 for 36 as South Africa crumbled to 124 © AFP

A quiet return was never to be expected but maybe such a successful one wasn’t either. Shoaib Akhtar, who returned to his first Test in almost a year by taking 4 for 36 as South Africa were bowled out for 124 on the first day of the second Test at Port Elizabeth, was evidently surprised by it himself. “I thought it would take me the whole Test match to get back into it,” he said after a day on which South Africa fought back to restrict Pakistan to only a lead of 11 runs, with four wickets left. The surprise emanated in part from just playing a Test again, something Shoaib thought might never happen again, after a year racked by initially by injuries and subsequently by the doping crisis, which saw him banned and then reinstated to international cricket. Controversies, he said, had been the story of his life.”If you asked me the same question [about his career] a few months ago I wouldn’t have had an answer that I would play cricket ever again,” he said. Shoaib was banned from playing cricket twice before, for chucking before testing positive in October for the banned anabolic steroid, Nandrolone, stalled his career once again.Shoaib was, however, quick to acknowledge the contributions of all the other bowlers in the attack; Danish Kaneria, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Sami shared the rest of the wickets as Pakistan, in bowling out South Africa for their lowest-ever total against them, put on a vastly improved performance from the first Test. “We worked in partnerships and every bowling spell brought a wicket,” he said. But they couldn’t drive home their advantage, as the South African bowlers and Makhaya Ntini in particular, with 4 for 18 in his 10 overs, ripped through their top order leaving them tottering on 135 for six, with only Inzamam-ul-Haq and the tail to bat.Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, was optimistic at the end of day. “We’re right back in it,” he said. Arthur added that his team’s batting had been poor on “a fantastic wicket, which ranks with Durban [against India] as the best we have played on this season.”Arthur hoped that South Africa would benefit from Inzamam coming in to bat on the second day with only the tail in support. Inzamam bruised his shoulder during fielding practice before the match and went off the field at the first drinks break which meant that he could not bat until an equivalent amount of time had passed. He was said to have been in considerable pain and is expected to ba after taking pain-killing injections.

Queensland brushed aside Western Australia’s batsmen, dismissing the home side for 190 on the first day at Perth. Western Australia are sitting at the bottom of the Pura Cup table and have registered just one victory this season.Only Adam Voges (42) and David Bandy (40) provided resistance to Queensland’s probing attack with a partnership of 75 before the home side capitulated dramatically, losing 5 for 34. Michael Kasprowicz, who took 4 for 58, was well supported by Andy Bichel (2 for 45) and the legspinner Daniel Doran who took the key wicket of Voges to finish with 3 for 71 on debut. In reply, Queensland lost Jimmy Maher first ball to Steve Magoffin and Ryan Broad for 40, but reached 2 for 110 at stumps and trail by 80 going into the second day.

PCB give go-ahead for biomechanics lab

The Pakistan Cricket Board has taken a major step towards tackling the problem of illegal bowling actions, by giving the go-ahead for a new biomechanics laboratory to be set up in Lahore.Pakistan has been beset by allegations of chucking, from Shoaib Akhtar and his hyper-extensive elbow, to the spinner Shoaib Malik, whose action is currently being examined by the International Cricket Council. Now, the plan is for the PCB to tackle the problem in-house, with a laboratory – the fifth of its kind in the world – to be established at the National Cricket academy at the Gadaffi Stadium.Pakistan’s former captain, Fazal Mahmood, has been appointed as bowling advisor to the PCB’s Illegal Bowling Action Commission, with five others named as domestic bowling advisors: the former Test fast bowler, Aqib Javed; two international spinners in Farrukh Zaman and Iqbal Sikander; Khizar Hayat, a Pakistani umpire, and Dr Sohail Saleem, a medical commissioner. In the short term, the PCB plans to install Quintic 9.03, a biomechanical analysis software that enables 2D analysis of a bowler’s action, by filming the players in action and then reducing the video to a stick-figure animation. A specialist in biomechanics, Dr Paul Hurrion, is to fly out to Lahore to install the software and conduct a two-day seminar that aims to instruct and guide the members of the committee.

Only with the arrival of No. 10 Ashish Nehra did Gambhir find a partner who was willing to give him worthwhile company. The two put on 50 runs before Gambhir’s long vigil ended. Nehra went on to make 25 before becoming the last man to be dismissed. Railways bowlers Harvinder Singh and Murali Kartik, who claimed three wickets each, played a big role in helping their team secure the vital 102-run lead.
