Shastri to Rohit: 'Bat 50 balls, come what may'

If Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma wants to rekindle his IPL batting form, he should bat a minimum of 50 balls to provide heft to an otherwise inexperienced middle order. That is the suggestion from former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who believes Rohit needs to “revisit” his approach in the IPL.A string of losses in the first half of the season is nothing new for Mumbai, who have lost both their matches before Tuesday’s away contest against Delhi Capitals. Rohit made just 1 in Mumbai’s tournament opener (against Royal Challengers Bangalore) and then 21 in the home match against Chennai Super Kings.Unlike in international cricket, Rohit the IPL batter has struggled for fluency over the past few years. Since 2021, Rohit has made 671 runs in 29 innings at an average of 23.13 and a strike rate of 123.11 with a solitary half-century. With a cut-off of 500 runs, as of April 11, Rohit ranks third-lowest in terms of average and fifth-lowest on strike rate.Related

  • Tait: For unorthodox players like Suryakumar Yadav, the fall can be a little bit hard

  • Celebrity-driven Mumbai struggle to find their way back from the precipitous fall

“He’s [Rohit] got to revisit his role,” Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time:Out on Tuesday. “Think of batting time, think of using that experience because that’s not there in the middle order like before. [Rohit has to] relook at how approaches his batting over a period of time. In the sense that if he wants to he can go a little hard in the first 3-4 overs, but he’s also got to think of batting and staying there till the 14th or 15th [over] to get that 70. He’s got to think 70, and at a good strike rate.”In the past, Rohit has attempted to play the aggressor but found limited success. He has also tried to anchor the innings, but once again not satisfactorily. Shastri has a “simple” solution. “A simple way of doing it is [to] think: “I’m going to bat 50 balls, come what may.” Don’t think overs, think balls – “I want to play 50 balls. If I play 50, I think my team is in a good position.” So he’s going to challenge himself and look to play those 50 balls.”This season is Rohit’s tenth as Mumbai’s captain. Under him, they have won the IPL five times, the last one coming in 2020. Only once, in 2013, has Rohit managed a season aggregate of 500-plus runs. Rohit has also occupied different positions before playing exclusively as an opener since 2019.Shastri felt Rohit was suitable at the top of the order but has to guide a batting order that remains inexperienced barring Suryakumar Yadav.”Rohit Sharma mentioned at the presentation in the last game that it’s time for the senior players to take the responsibility and take the mantle in their own hands, including himself. He said that because we’ve seen too many 20s, 30s from Rohit. You want him to carry on, get that 70-80 which can have a huge impact in the way Mumbai Indians perform, because a captain scoring runs will not just make his job easier but it will lift the spirit of that dugout very quickly. So for Rohit to fire, I think it’s very important.”

Wow: Rodgers has already found Celtic's next Maeda in stunning £2m star

Celtic progressed through to the last four of the SFA Cup on Sunday after they claimed a 2-0 victory over Hibernian in the quarter-final clash at Parkhead.

Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah found the back of the net in either half to secure the victory for the Hoops, who are in search of a domestic treble under Brendan Rodgers.

The Bhoys are 16 points clear of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race and won the League Cup earlier this term, which means that they are, essentially, only the SFA Cup away from clinching all three trophies.

Idah, as you can see in the clip above, made certain of the victory on Sunday with his flicked finish from close range after he came off the bench in the second half.

There was also yet another goal for Celtic’s Japanese dynamo at the top end of the pitch, as Maeda scored his fifth goal in three SFA Cup appearances this term.

Daizen Maeda's goalscoring form this season

The Japan international has racked up a staggering 27 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants so far this season, as he closes in on his first 30-goal season in a Celtic shirt.

His improvement at the top end of the pitch has been a joy to watch from a Hoops perspective this term, after his return of just ten goals and four assists in 36 matches in the 2023/24 campaign.

Maeda has already scored more than twice as many goals as he managed last season and has proven himself to be a reliable presence for Rodgers in the final third, whether he has operated on the left flank or in the middle as a centre-forward.

The 27-year-old star, who is currently valued at £6.7m by Transfermarkt, has vastly improved his output in front of goal in the Premiership, after he only managed a return of six goals in the top-flight last term.

As you can see in the table above, Maeda has played two fewer league games than he did last season, but has already scored more goals, created more ‘big chances’, and recorded more assists.

This shows that Rodgers has got the best out of the Japan international and helped him to be more ruthless and creative at the top end of the pitch, which speaks to the player’s desire to improve and the manager’s ability to develop his squad.

The Northern Irish head coach also helped Matt O’Riley to explode as a goalscoring threat after he arrived at Parkhead in the summer of 2023.

O’Riley scored three goals in 38 league matches under Ange Postecoglou in the 2022/23 campaign, before racking up an exceptional 18 goals in 37 Premiership matches from midfield under Rodgers last season.

The former Liverpool and Leicester boss knows how to unlock the goalscoring touch for his players and he may already have his next project, his next Maeda and O’Riley, brewing in Hyun-jun Yang.

Hyun-jun Yang's Celtic potential

The South Korean youngster came off the bench against Hibernian and got himself into a good position to score for the Hoops, but scuffed his effort and failed to find the back of the net.

Chalkboard

67HailHail described him as a ‘supersub’, handing him a rating of 6/10 for his cameo, and it has been clear to see the improvement in his play in the final third this season, even if he did not take his opportunity to score on Sunday.

Celtic winger Hyun-jun Yang.

The 22-year-old, who arrived from Gangwon in the summer of 2023 for just £2m, endured a fairly difficult first season in Glasgow, but has adjusted to football and life in Scotland brilliantly now.

Yang racked up just one goal and three assists in his 31 appearances in all competitions for the Premiership giants, which is far from an impressive return for a winger who is expected to contribute at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the South Korea international’s form has vastly improved in the current campaign, after having a year to settle in, as he has racked up 11 goal contributions in 27 matches.

A goal or an assist every 95 minutes is a mind-blowing improvement on his return of one every 320 minutes in the 2023/24 campaign and shows that the young attacker is heading in the right direction.

It shows that Rodgers and his coaching team have done a terrific job with him on the training pitch over the last 18 months or so, whilst also showing that Yang is determined to improve and develop as a player by working hard and taking his opportunities when they come.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph described the forward as a “raw” player with “real potential” last month, which is a good way to sum up where he is at in his Celtic career right now.

Yang is behind the likes of Nicolas Kuhn, Jota, and Maeda in the wide areas but he still has plenty of time on his hands, at the age of 22, and his statistics show that the winger is heading in the right direction.

Yang

Rodgers has shown, with Maeda and O’Riley, that he can improve attackers and knows when and when not to unleash them at the right times, which is why patience is required with Yang.

It may not happen this season, or even next season, but if the Hoops are patient and allow the South Korean gem the time he needs to develop and thrive at Parkhead, the club could have their next attacking sensation on their hands.

Worth more than Tierney: Celtic must regret losing "amazing" star for £0

The former Celtic youngster is now worth even more than Kieran Tierney.

Of course, it is now down to Yang to continue on his path of improvement and ensure that he takes his chances when they come his way, so that Rodgers can trust him in important moments and matches moving forward.

More league goals than Idah: Celtic’s £2m flop is now a "complete striker"

Celtic supporters have plenty to look forward to for the remainder of this season.

In mid-week, the Hoops’ Champions League campaign heartbreakingly came to an end, ousted by Bayern Munich, leading on the night in Bavaria thanks to Nicolas Kühn, making it 2-2 on aggregate, only for the Bundesliga leaders to snatch victory deep into stoppage time.

Domestically meantime, having already hoisted aloft the League Cup in December, the Celts are on course for a sixth treble in nine seasons.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are through to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals while, ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s visit to Hibernian, sit a ginormous 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership.

Meantime, a former Celtic flop is flying south of the border, currently out-scoring Adam Idah in the EFL Championship.

Celtic's best centre-forwards

Celtic supporters have been treated to a fair few high-quality centre-forwards over the years.

Daizen Maeda

Right now, their attack is being spearheaded by Daizen Maeda, who’s now scored 51 goals in 144 appearances for the Hoops while, considering he’s bagged 11 goals since Christmas, current teammate Alistair Johnston recently described him as “one of the most in-form players in Europe”.

Meantime, the Japanese striker’s close-range header in the first leg against Bayern Munich saw him become the first Celtic player since Joe Craig in 1977/78 to score four+ goals in a single Champions League season.

Maeda got the nod in Munich to lead the attack, chosen over Adam Idah, whose statistics aren’t too bad either, having netted 13 times so far this season, including three in the Champions League, so let’s see how both compare to some of the great Celtic strikers of the not too distant past.

There are certainly some legendary centre-forwards on that list, all of whom have produced massive moments in a hooped jersey, but right now it’s Idah who has the best minutes-per-goal ratio, possibly helped by his significantly smaller sample size.

One striker who certainly did not make the cut, scoring just two goals for the club, has probably been completely forgotten about by the majority of the Celtic supporters, but is currently outscoring Idah in the league.

Celtic flop turned Championship star

Vakoun Issouf Bayo joined Celtic from Slovakian side FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda for a reported fee of £2m in January 2019, with club-legend Ľubomír Moravčík describing him as a “proven” goalscorer upon his arrival.

Fair to say, he did not live up to this hype, scoring just two goals in 17 appearances for the Celts, labelled a ‘flop’ by Joe Donnelly of the National, thereby loaned out to Toulouse, before being sold permanently to Gent for £1.4m.

After catching fire at fellow Belgian outfit Royal Charleroi, scoring 14 times in just 26 outings for les Carolos, Bayo joined Watford for £5m in July 2022, and has really found a home in Hertfordshire.

The Ivorian has scored 21 times in his career for the Hornets, ten of which have come in the EFL Championship this season, including bagging four as Tom Cleverley’s team smashed Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in November. That places him ahead of Idah with regard to league goals, with the Irishman netting just eight times in the Premiership.

This, according to Andrew French of the Watford Observer, makes him the first Watford player to score four in a match since Odion Ighalo in 2015, and only the seventh player to do so overall. It’s no wonder Cleverley dubbed him the “complete striker”.

Vakoun Bayo

For comparison, during his final half-season at Norwich, Idah scored just six goals in one fewer appearance, so, while you’ll be hard-pushed to find a Celtic supporter who believes they should’ve kept hold of Bayo, his form in England’s second-tier is something that surely no one at Parkhead could’ve seen coming.

Celtic have secured their biggest bargain since Maeda in "amazing" star

Rafa Benitez upgrade: 49ers keen on Rangers move for 4-3-3 manager

Glasgow Rangers decided to part ways with Belgian head coach Philippe Clement last month after less than 18 months in the dugout at Ibrox.

The former AS Monaco and Club Brugge boss won the League Cup early on in his tenure, but his side’s poor form in the 2024/25 campaign led to the board relieving him of his duties.

Rangers were 13 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership at the time of his exit, had already lost to the Hoops in the League Cup final, and were knocked out of the SFA Cup by second tier outfit Queen’s Park.

The board opted to bring Barry Ferguson in as the interim replacement and he secured a terrific win last time out in the Europa League, beating Fenerbahce 3-1 away from home.

Sky Sports recently reported that Paraag Marathe – president of San Francisco 49ers investment arm, the 49ers Enterprises – and health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh, who is executive chairman of ParetoHealth, are two key figures in a US takeover that has been agreed in principle.

The Gers now look set for new ownership this year, and they are reportedly set to play a big role in the appointment of Clement’s long-term replacement, with Rafa Benitez being one of the potential candidates.

Why Rangers should avoid Rafa Benitez

The Daily Record reported earlier this month that the former Real Madrid and Liverpool head coach is a firm target for the 49ers ahead of the summer.

Their reporter Scott Burns was quoted as saying: “I was told that Rafa Benitez was one they were going to talk to. I spoke to a colleague who is very close to Rafa Benitez and his agent and they had said there had been no contact at all.”

Everton's former manager Rafael Benitez.

This suggests that their interest is at an early stage, as they have not made contact to discuss a potential move to Ibrox, and that is where the 49ers should leave it.

Excluding Super Cups or Charity Shields and second division titles, Benitez has not won a major trophy since he lifted the Italian Cup with Napoli at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the Spaniard has not averaged more than 1.5 points per game at a club since his very brief spell with Real Madrid almost a decade ago.

He does not have much in the way of recent experience in managing a team that is expected to challenge for titles and trophies every season, which suggests that the former Newcastle man would not be the right fit for what Rangers should want out of a manager moving forward.

Manager Focus

However, the Scottish giants could appoint a big upgrade on Rafa Benitez by swooping for another one of the 49ers’ reported managerial targets.

Rangers eyeing English manager

According to The Boot Room, the 49ers-backed consortium are interested in a deal to bring English head coach Steven Gerrard back to Ibrox ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The report claims that the takeover is expected to be completed by the end of the current season, and that one of their first priorities will be appointing a new manager to lead the team going forward.

Nathan Patterson, Steven Gerrard

It states that Gerrard is one of the potential options to replace Ferguson in the dugout, although it remains to be seen how high up on their shortlist he is.

The 44-year-old tactician left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January, after 18 months at the club, and that means that he is out of contract and available for the Gers to approach and appoint, without having to negotiate a deal with a team.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Rangers must, now, swoop to bring Gerrard, who left the club back in November 2021 to join Aston Villa, back to the club as he would get Ibrox rocking again.

Why Rangers should appoint Steven Gerrard

The out-of-work manager, who has typically deployed an attacking 4-3-3 formation in his career, would get Ibrox rocking because the fans in Glasgow already know that he has what it takes to get the better of Celtic.

Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 campaign, showing that he knows what it takes to clinch the league title ahead of the Hoops, and the supporters could get excited by the prospect of him returning to have a second go at doing it.

Ex-Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard.

It was the first time the club had won the top-flight title since 2011, an achievement that was hailed as “magnificent” by Sir Alex Ferguson, and the Gers have not won the division since then either – with Celtic on course for their fourth straight league title.

Rangers, of course, also went unbeaten that season – winning 32 and drawing six of their 38 matches – and Ibrox would be rocking at the prospect of even coming close to repeating that accomplishment, especially when you consider that the team has already lost six times in the league this season.

Gerrard managed 192 matches during his time in Glasgow and averaged an excellent 2.15 points per game, which is more than Benitez has managed in any of his last four jobs since his exit from Real Madrid at the start of 2016.

Given that the Englishman moved on from Ibrox in 2021, this also shows that the former Liverpool midfielder has more recent experience of winning trophies and being in charge of a team that is expected to win week-in-week-out.

That is why Gerrard would be a big upgrade on Benitez, who has averaged 1.48 points per game or less in each job since 2016, because he is used to winning, as well as having the relevant experience at Ibrox.

Rangers already had a bigger talent than Cerny in "electric" loan star

Rangers have had their fair share of loan players to shine at Ibrox over the years.

ByRoss Kilvington Mar 9, 2025

Therefore, the 49ers-backed consortium must forget about a move for Rafa Benitez and, instead, move to bring Gerrard back for a second spell in the dugout at Ibrox next season, in the hope that he can recapture the magic of his first spell and get the supporters rocking in the stadium once again.

Kylian Mbappe's impact, defensive deficiencies and the six biggest reasons why Real Madrid's 'best squad in Europe' managed to finish the season without a major trophy

Carlo Ancelotti's side have been dethroned in the Spanish top flight after Los Blancos' many chickens came home to roost in 2024-25

It's official: Real Madrid are no longer the champions of Spain, their La Liga crown on its way to Barcelona after the Catalans sealed the title with Thursday's win over Espanyol. But not only have Madrid been dethroned domestically, they are now officially going to end the season without any major trophies to their name. Victories in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup may have been nice at the time, while the Club World Cup could still be theirs this summer, but the competitions that Madrid really wanted to win have passed them by in 2024-25.

Twelve months ago, that would have been unthinkable. After Carlo Ancelotti had guided an already uber-talented squad to a La Liga-Champions League double, Los Blancos added Kylian Mbappe to the mix in a move that was meant to usher in an era of dominance in Madrid. Throw in the arrival of Brazilian wonderkid Endrick, and it was difficult to see any team who, on paper, could challenge what Florentino Perez had assembled at Santiago Bernabeu.

Football is not won on paper, however, and Madrid struggled from the off this season. They have shown glimpses of their best in both La Liga and the Champions League, but in the end they were thoroughly outclassed when it came to the crunch. And so while the talent of Madrid's individuals cannot be questioned, it soon became clear that this was a deeply flawed team, and that has led to a forgettable campaign in the capital for which Ancelotti is paying with his job.

So who is to blame, and how does Xabi Alonso fix the problems that plagued Madrid over the past nine months? GOAL looks at where it all went wrong for Los Blancos…

Getty ImagesMbappe's impact

When Madrid confirmed the signing of Mbappe after years of trying to get him out of Paris Saint-Germain, there were two predictions made by most fans and pundits: that Mbappe would score a lot of goals for the Spanish giants, but that his signing might have a negative impact on others. Both have played out as many expected.

Mbappe has scored goals – more than any other Madrid player ever has in their debut season for the club, in fact. His strike in Wednesday's win over Mallorca was his 39th in all competitions, and few would bet against him breaking the 40 mark in the final two games of the campaign. But those goals have come at an undeniable price.

Spin it however you like, but Vinicius Jr and Mbappe are most comfortable playing in the same position on the left wing. Some pointed towards Mbappe's performances in a two-striker formation for France, or referenced the fact that Vinicius played on the right when Madrid beat Manchester City in last season's Champions League as reasons why the pair could be compatible, but it's clear that they were clutching at straws.

The plan was for Mbappe to play as a No.9, with Vinicius and Rodrygo either side of him while Jude Bellingham moved back into a more traditional midfield role after thriving as a false nine during his own debut campaign at the Bernabeu. And while Mbappe has found a way to make it work for himself, the overall attacking structure hasn't been functioning. He has continued to drift out to the left-hand side at times, while he doesn't make the instinctive runs or offer the hold-up play of a more traditional central striker.

Bellingham's own La Liga goal total has dropped from 19 last season to just eight this – and seven of those came between November and the first week in January. Rodrygo, meanwhile, has looked a pale imitation of himself given how much of Madrid's play has come down their left, and he has thus been benched for a number of key games coming down the stretch.

Defensively, meanwhile, Mbappe's reluctance to work hard off the ball has begun to rub off on some of his high-profile team-mates. As such, they lack coherence when they have the ball, and find themselves outnumbered without it. Mbappe may have held up the goal-scoring side of the bargain, but so many of Madrid's other issues are rooted in his introduction to the team.

AdvertisementGettyVinicius' rotten revenge tour

No one, however, has been impacted on as negatively by Mbappe's arrival as Vinicius. His overall goal involvement statistics haven't noticeably dropped – he has 36 combined goals and assists in all competitions this season compared to 37 in 2023-24 – but there is no doubt that Vini is nowhere near as decisive as he has proven to be in recent years.

Mbappe limiting the space Vinicius has to operate in has certainly caused some of the Brazilian's issues, and one of Alonso's biggest jobs once he arrives from Bayer Leverkusen will be to figure out how to get the best out of his two superstar attackers. But the ex-Madrid midfielder-turned-coach also needs to find a way to get Vincius out of his post-Ballon d'Or funk.

The winger's public strop at not winning the 2024 Golden Ball amused many, but most expected Vinicius to be true to his word when he clapped back at his snub by claiming that fans "weren't ready" for his on-pitch response. That feeling certainly grew after he marked his first league game following the ceremony in Paris with a hat-trick to beat Osasuna, but as it turned out, that was the high point of Vinicius' campaign.

He has scored just three La Liga goals since netting that treble on November 9, while the majority of his strikes in the Champions League from December onwards have been inconsequential to the final result. If anything, Vinicius has looked to be trying too hard to prove himself to the watching world, as everything about his play has been forced, desperate and even reckless at times.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, has grown increasingly frustrated with the ex-Flamengo starlet, and has been seen imploring Vinicius to defend and berating him when he doesn't track back. Rumours of a potential move to Saudi Arabia look to be going away for now, but there is no doubt that Madrid need Vinicius back towards his best if they are to get themselves back on top.

Getty Images SportInjury woes

One element of Madrid's demise that Mbappe cannot be blamed for is that of the injury problems that have piled up over the course of the campaign. Every team in world football has to deal with fitness issues over the course of an increasingly busy season, but Los Blancos have been hit more than most by injury-enforced absences in 2024-25.

By mid-November, Ancelotti had lost the whole right side of his preferred defence after Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao both suffered season-ending ACL injuries, while David Alaba has struggled to put a run of games together ever since returning from his own long-term knee problem in January.

Eduardo Camavinga, meanwhile, will end the season having missed half of Madrid's league games due to various injuries, and Ferland Mendy hasn't played since mid-March after suffering back-to-back muscle injuries. A host of other players have also missed short stints after picking up more minor knocks, while Antonio Rudiger's six-match ban for his Copa del Rey final meltdown brought forward planned meniscus surgery after he had played with severe pain for the past seven months.

Bellingham is set to join Rudiger in going under the knife this summer as the England midfielder aims to rid himself of the shoulder problem that has been bothering him throughout the season, and though he has been able to soldier on to not further expose Madrid, it is clear that a lack of quality depth has come back to bite them. Los Blancos needed to invest in other areas than just attack last summer but didn't, and the speed with which they are trying to get deals for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen over the line speaks to them trying to belatedly solve the problem. The shame for them is that, for this season at least, it's too little, too late.

GettyMidfield control disappears

Perhaps the gap Madrid still most need to fill, though, is in the centre of midfield. While Toni Kroos' decision to retire at the age of 34 came as a shock to many, the fact he announced it before last season was over at least gave his club chance to take stock and weigh up their options. In the end, they decided to ride with what they had – and it hasn't worked.

Kroos' final campaign was perhaps one of his best. His control and cool-headedness in the middle of the park ensured Madrid were always able to stay in control of games regardless of the scoreline. The German could play short and long passes with equal accuracy while both slowing down and speeding the tempo up when necessary. Vinicius and Bellingham scored the goals and grabbed the headlines, but Kroos was the player who made 2023-24 Madrid truly tick.

Replacing a one-of-a-kind player isn't straightforward, of course, but that Madrid seemingly made no effort to do so has ultimately proved costly. Any sense of control from their games has disappeared, and until they can find a suitable replacement, they may struggle to compete at the very highest level in the future.
