Langer looks at 'other opportunities' despite Ponting's pursuit for Hurricanes job

Jeff Vaughan appointed as Hurricanes’ new coach with James Hopes and Darren Berry alongside him

Alex Malcolm22-Jul-2022Justin Langer won’t return to coaching in the near term after deciding to take up “other opportunities” despite Ricky Ponting pursuing him vigorously for the Hobart Hurricanes’ head coaching role.Hurricanes announced Jeff Vaughan as their new head coach on Friday and he will combine the job with his role as Tasmania head coach. Vaughan is Ponting’s first appointment in his new role as Hurricanes’ head of strategy. Ponting also appointed James Hopes and Darren Berry as assistants alongside Vaughan. But Ponting was candid in explaining that his close friend Langer had been his first choice. The pair had discussed the role at length and Langer had shown interest early in the process before other opportunities piqued his interest.Related

'He's got a bit more thinking to do..' – Ponting reveals Langer might be interested in coaching Hobart Hurricanes

“I’m on record saying that I’ve spoken with Justin quite a bit about coming down here and being the head coach of the Hurricanes and he was quite keen,” Ponting said. “The initial conversations were pretty exciting. And he would like to get back involved again. But as things got progressed and things got a little bit closer, I think he’s had some other opportunities and exciting things maybe come across his desk that he thinks he might be able to enjoy a little bit more through the course of the summer.”I’m sure you’ll find out about some of those things over the next little period of time. But as soon as he [took] himself out of the running, it was really obvious to me who the next guy had to be and that’s the guy that we’ve appointed as head coach in Jeff. I’m not hiding from the fact that I spoke to him [Langer]. I spoke to him a lot about it and I think everyone, probably around Australian cricket circles knew that I was trying to get him down here for the Hurricanes but it wasn’t to be.”Langer has remained in Perth since his messy departure from the Australia men’s coaching job in February. He has been doing a lot of corporate speaking as well as fulfilling his duties as a board member for the West Coast Eagles, an Australian Football League club. When Ponting first flagged Langer’s name as his number one candidate for the Hurricanes job back in June, it was met with a lukewarm reception from Hurricanes’ veteran Matthew Wade when he was asked about Langer’s style.Vaughan’s appointment is likely to be a popular one. He has vast experience having been with Tasmania and Hurricanes previously as an assistant under former coach Adam Griffith. He left both in 2021 to join the Australia men’s coaching team under Langer for the T20 World Cup and the Ashes, but returned to take the Tasmania job earlier this year just prior to Andrew McDonald taking over as Australia’s head coach.”Everyone that I’ve spoken to around Tasmanian cricket or around the Australian cricket team just had glowing reports about Jeff with his coaching ability and his coaching style and his people management,” Ponting said. “I think that’s exactly what the Hurricanes need right now.”Hobart Hurricanes coaching team (left to right), James Hopes (assistant), Ricky Ponting (head of strategy), Jeff Vaughan (head coach) and Darren Berry (assistant)•Cricket TasmaniaCombining the Tasmania men’s domestic program with Hurricanes’ BBL team under one coach is a model that has worked successfully in Western Australia under both Langer and Adam Voges and is currently employed in South Australia and Queensland. But the addition of Hopes and Berry adds significant global franchise experience to Hurricanes. Hopes has been an assistant under Ponting in the IPL at Delhi Capitals while Berry has previously coached Adelaide Strikers in the BBL and coached South Australia to a T20 title in the old Big Bash competition. Berry has been an assistant coach at title-winning teams in the IPL and PSL and also works in the Hundred.”With Jeff being the head coach of the Tigers and what I felt the Hurricanes needed right here and right now it just seemed like the perfect fit for him to be in charge of both programs,” Ponting said. “But in saying that was also really important to me that I got high-quality experienced assistant coaches underneath Jeff to make sure that when Jeff is away with the Tigers that the Hurricanes program is actually in as good a shape as possible by the time he joins, which will be probably two weeks before the first game.”In other coaching news, Griffith has joined Victoria as their men’s bowling coach under head coach Chris Rogers. Victoria have also appointed Ben Rohrer as their new batting coach to take over from Andre Borovec, who has joined the Australia men’s team as an assistant coach in the role Vaughan vacated.Former Victoria and Australia batter Cameron White has departed Adelaide Strikers to join Sydney Sixers as an assistant coach under Greg Shipperd.

Deepti and Shafali make big moves in ICC ODI rankings

Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma are having an excellent time of it in the ODI series in Sri Lanka, and have shot up the ICC ODI player rankings because of their returns in the two matches so far, both of which India have won.A day after India won the second game by ten wickets in Pallekele, Shafali, who hit a bruising unbeaten 71 in the 174 chase, moved up 12 places to a career-best 36th among batters. Shafali, also the No. 5 in the T20I batting chart, leads the runs tally in the series with 106 runs, scored at a strike rate of 95.49.

Deepti, meanwhile, has made gains in both the batting and the bowling rankings. Her offspin has brought her 3 for 25 and 2 for 30 so far, and that has taken her up three spots to No. 16 in the bowlers’ list. And her unbeaten 25 in the first ODI helped her climb two batting spots to No. 29. Deepti is now within one point of equalling Australia’s Ash Gardner, currently ranked sixth, on the allrounders’ table.Renuka Singh, the spearhead of India’s pace attack with Meghna Singh at the moment, was another gainer. Just four ODIs old, 26-year-old Renuka bettered her previous best in Monday’s second ODI, where she took 4 for 28. This lifted her 38 places to No. 65 on the bowling table that is currently headed by South Africa’s Shabnim Ismail. For Sri Lanka, batter Nilakshi de Silva gained 13 spots to reach No. 57 after tallying 75 runs in the two matches, while Hasini Perera – up 16 places to 83rd – and Anushka Sanjeewani – up nine places to 89th – are the others to gain positions. In the rankings for bowlers, former captain Inoka Ranaweera, the left-arm spinner, is now ranked No. 21, on the back of her four-for in the first ODI.While these are still early days in the new cycle of the ICC Women’s Championship, a 3-0 series sweep on Wednesday will help India catch up with current toppers South Africa on six points. A Sri Lanka win in the last game will help them draw level with India and Pakistan on four points.

He’s better than Kolo Muani: Spurs join race to sign "unstoppable" PL star

If you could write a one week script detailing the trials and tribulations of Tottenham Hotspur it would go very much like this week.

A few days ago, Spurs were defeating Arne Slot’s rampant Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. So, the confidence should have been there after a rather sticky patch in the Premier League.

No better game than an FA Cup tie against non-league Tamworth then, surely? Think again.

Remarkably, the National League side held Ange Postecoglou’s men, taking them all the way to extra time. To put it bluntly, the top-flight side were not good enough.

Tamworth went toe to toe with the Lilywhites and more than deserved the 0-0 scoreline at the end of the 90 minutes, even if things did go on to finish 3-0 after extra time.

After an embarrassing time of it on Sunday, it only highlights the need for new recruits in the January transfer window.

Tottenham's January transfer window plans

One of the names on the lips of supporters at the moment is PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani. There have been a number of reports suggesting that Spurs could sign the Frenchman on loan this summer and there has been a fresh update from the Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler.

He reported this weekend that ‘Spurs and Juventus lead the way’ for the 26-year-old this winter. That’s because Manchester United’s interest in the attacker has allegedly cooled.

Speaking of United, it’s a Red Devil who Postecogou’s side are also interested in with Wheeler revealing that there is interest in Marcus Rashford.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It’s stated that Dortmund, Milan, Juve and Barcelona have the England international on their radar.

How Marcus Rashford compares to Randal Kolo Muani

It’s thought that initially, both players would be available on loan deals. So, it becomes clear immediately who Spurs should look at pursuing more strongly this month.

While Kolo Muani has scored as many as 23 goals in the 2022/23 season for Eintracht Frankfurt, he’s not exactly set the world alight at PSG, playing just ten times and scoring twice in Ligue 1 this term.

Crucially, he’s not got experience of the Premier League yet which if you’re bringing in someone for just a six-month loan spell, wouldn’t be advantageous.

Rashford, on the other hand, would not need a huge period of adaptation, thus meaning he’s likely the more sensible option if a deal can be done.

While the United forward has only found the net on seven occasions this term, that would make him Tottenham’s joint-third top-scorer alongside club captain, Heung-min Son.

A look at the stats over the last two campaigns also tells us why Rashford – who was “unstoppable” in the words of Erik ten Hag on the way to 39 goal involvements in all competitions throughout 2022/23 – would be a better acquisition.

While Kolo Muani certainly looks like the more creative outlet here, Rashford has a regular habit of scoring goals in English football and certainly over the last 18 months or so, he’s been a more progressive carrier of the ball and a more efficient carrier at that too.

Of course, you can look at the England international’s work rate as a cause for concern but if Postecoglou wants something short-term then the out-of-favour United man is probably the player to go for here.

Club looking to sign 6 foot 2 Leeds player who 49ers have only just signed

It’s been a quiet transfer window for Leeds United so far, but that could be about to change as a club in France are hoping to sign one man who has just arrived at Elland Road, according to a new report.

Leeds United transfer news

The January transfer window is always a hard month to complete transfers, and with Daniel Farke stating earlier on he wasn’t a fan of this window, it is no surprise to see that the Whites have yet to conduct any transfer business.

Farke eyeing big January signing in "tremendous" Rutter repeat for Leeds

Leeds United appear to be targeting reinforcements all over the pitch this January.

1 ByEthan Lamb Jan 16, 2025

However, there are still over two weeks remaining before it closes, and therefore, plans could change, as Leeds may be forced to enter the transfer market if they lose players.

The Championship leaders are being linked with potential new arrivals, as it was reported earlier this week that Leeds scouts watched Bali Mumba in action for Plymouth Argyle in their FA Cup win over Brentford. The defender is a player Farke knows well, having worked together at Norwich City.

Meanwhile, a report also emerged on Wednesday claiming Leeds have made a 4 million euro offer to sign Dje Davilla from Portuguese side Leiria. That is reportedly the figure the club are wanting to get for the midfielder, but a deal looks very complicated to complete, as the player needs to get a work permit. As well as Leeds, there are also other teams showing a strong interest in Davilla.

French club hoping to sign Leeds midfielder

As the Whites look at potential new arrivals, there could be an exit on the horizon as Jeunes Footeux reports that Paris FC are interested in signing Josuha Guilavogui from Leeds.

Guilavogui, who only joined the Whites in October as a free agent, has emerged on the radar of the Ligue 2 side. Paris’ interest in the 34-year-old is considered “ambitious”, but Paris are looking to get into Ligue 1 by the end of this campaign and could see the midfielder as someone who can help achieve that.

The Frenchman signed a contract until the end of this campaign at Elland Road and has so far played 10 times for the Whites; only one has come from the start, and that was in the recent FA Cup game against Harrogate Town. Guilavogui was brought in by Farke to bolster his midfield options, as at the time Leeds had an injury crisis and were left short in that area of the pitch.

Guilavogui has had a small role to play so far, but given there is still plenty left to go in the Championship, Farke may want to keep hold of a 6 foot 2 physically imposing midfielder, as his versatility makes him a key man to have around the squad in case the Whites suffer injuries or suspensions.

Cummins: Innings defeat a 'good reality check'

Australia’s captain said their collapse from 298 for 5 on the second morning was “an opportunity missed”

Andrew Fidel Fernando11-Jul-2022They won an attritional series in Pakistan, and dominated Sri Lanka in what was essentially a two-day win last week. But this loss in Galle, by an innings and 39 runs, might be a “reality check” for an Australia team intent on improving their long-form cricket in Asia.So said captain Pat Cummins, after the second Test hurtled to a conclusion on the fourth evening – Australia collapsing to 151 against spin inside 41 overs.”Some batters went out with a really clear plan, and you just get a ball with your name on it earlier than you would’ve liked,” Cummins said. “It’s a good reality check for people touring over here that it’s really hard. So many positives out of last week, that we did find methods that work. One small hiccup doesn’t mean you have to change everything. And it makes for more learning than after a win.Related

Jayasuriya's 12-wicket haul, Chandimal's 206* give Sri Lanka series-levelling win

Stats – Dream debut for Prabath Jayasuriya and a record knock by Dinesh Chandimal

“I think half our batting line-up and half our bowling line-up hasn’t played a lot over here in the subcontinent. So the experience on these two vastly different wickets [in the two Tests], I think we got a lot of lessons out of it to take to India next year.”Cummins pointed to the second morning as a session in which Australia let the match slip. Although they had won the first day, ending at 298 for 5 at stumps, they then lost their last five first-innings wickets for 35 runs, finishing at 364 all out. This was after Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne had hit hundreds, and while Smith remained at the crease, the wickets fell at the other end.”That was probably an opportunity missed. The way we set up the game on day one, we were hoping to get 400-plus, which history suggests here puts you in a really good position,” Cummins said. “Unfortunately none of us hung around with Smith long enough to get up to the 400-plus, which meant even if we were out there for 180 overs you were kind of level at the turn.”Dimuth Karunaratne and Pat Cummins pose with the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy, which they shared•AFP/Getty Images

Australia’s second-innings collapse took less than two sessions, after they started 190 runs behind. Usman Khawaja and David Warner put on 49 to begin, suggesting the surface remained decent for batting. But then they lost 10 wickets for 101.”Certainly as the game went on the footmarks started to react a bit more,” Cummins said. “A fresh bowling side always makes a bit of a difference as well. So it all happened pretty quickly, and unfortunately we were on the wrong side.”The plan had been to just bat. It was still close to five sessions left in the game. I think if we were behind by just over 100 we were still in the game, but 200 probably put it beyond us. We were trying to bat for the rest of the day then come up with a plan for tomorrow.”Australia’s tour has come in the backdrop of a crippling economic crisis and a major political crisis in Sri Lanka. Cummins and the Australia team have made efforts to reach out and understand the situation better, even making appeals for fundraisers. On day two of this Test, large protests were seen on the fort overlooking the ground, and at the central intersection at Galle, which is right outside the stadium.”We’ve got protests round the ground, it really hits home how lucky we are to be travelling the world but also in some ways it’s more than just being here to play cricket, you can see the impact it can have. It hasn’t been lost on our group, something we speak about quite a bit.”You couldn’t escape the protests on Saturday. We got lots of messages from back home, just saying ‘How is it? Hope you’re ok.’ And we felt totally fine.”

Newspaper suggests West Ham have "bid for" £50 million attacker

West Ham United are in need of potential reinforcements as we fast approach the January transfer window, especially going forward, with manager Julen Lopetegui setting his sights on an intriguing option for the winter.

West Ham target new forward in January as Julen Lopetegui buys more time

Up until very recently, Lopetegui was a man facing intense scrutiny in the Hammers dugout, but West Ham’s small unbeaten run of four consecutive Premier League games has seemingly bought the Spaniard more time.

The east Londoners have won two and drawn two over their last quartet of domestic matches – building upon their 2-1 ‘El Sackico’ win over Wolves at the start of December – and most recently downed Southampton 1-0 courtesy of Jarrod Bowen’s strike on the hour mark.

However, there is reason to be concerned by West Ham’s lack of attacking output. Michail Antonio was recently in a horrific car crash, which will keep him out for at least a year, and Danny Ings appears out of favour under Lopetegui.

Summer signing Niclas Füllkrug is still working to find his feet again after recovering from a persistent Achilles tendon problem that kept the German out for months, with Lopetegui often utilising Bowen in a makeshift striker role over the last few weeks.

West Ham are widely reported to be after a new number nine in January, but will have to operate a sell-to-buy policy after a summer of heavy spending (Daily Mail).

As well as a potential fresh striking option, reports continue to link West Ham with a move for Real Sociedad’s Brais Mendez.

Real Sociedad midfielder Brais Mendez

The four-cap Spain international has entered technical director Tim Steidten’s radar ahead of the winter window, and there are suggestions that Lopetegui personally wants West Ham to strike a mid-season deal for Mendez.

The 27-year-old has bagged three goals and three assists over 22 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad this season, and has played in a variety of midfield roles, including as a deep-lying midfielder, traditional centre-midfielder and in attacking midfield.

West Ham "bid for" Real Sociedad attacker Brais Mendez

Now, Spanish newspaper AS has shared an update on their rumoured pursuit of the former Celta Vigo star.

The outlet suggests in its printed headline, via Sport Witness, that West Ham have “bid for” Mendez – but doesn’t detail the offer or financial conditions they’ve allegedly approached Sociedad with.

Brais Mendez for Real Sociedad

However, AS does back other reports that Lopetegui is personally keen on bringing his compatriot to the London Stadium. Mendez’s contract at Sociedad is said to contain a £50 million release clause, which could be used as a yardstick to determine an appropriate asking price for interested clubs.

Aston Villa are also contending for Mendez, but the report hints that West Ham are ahead of Unai Emery’s side in the race for his signature.

Called a “sensational” wide player by Breaking the Lines editor Zach Lowy, Mendez boasts 35 La Liga goals and 27 assists across his appearances in the division.

Tottenham make enquiry to sign "underrated" £40m+ Inter Milan ace for Ange

Tottenham are set to be busy in the January transfer window, and have now made an enquiry about signing a new midfielder for Ange Postecoglou in the winter window, though they may have to wait to secure his arrival in north London.

Tottenham's transfer plans

Currently marooned in the bottom half of the Premier League with 10 losses in 20 games, Tottenham are in the midst of a crisis.

Tottenham Hotspur managerAngePostecogloubefore the match

Injuries have crippled their campaign to date, with all of their centre-backs missing through injury or illness in the second half of their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United. Elsewhere, both Richarlison and Wilson Odobert have been sidelined for much of the season, while Rodrigo Bentancur has served a long ban and Guglielmo Vicario is set to be absent until February.

Such issues have forced Postecoglou to make ends meet, with Archie Gray and Djed Spence playing at centre-back against the Magpies. However, with the January transfer window now open, the Lilywhites have a chance to address some of their squad problems, and are expected to be busy.

The club have already announced the signing of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in a deal worth a reported £12.5m, while they are also thought to be targeting a defender and a forward this window.

Postecoglou has already suggested his side may be busy, admitting before the defeat to Newcastle that “the club are working hard to try and sort of get some help for the playing group” and that “it’s no secret we need to bolster our numbers up a little bit, so the club’s working hard on that.”

Now, it appears that they have taken an interest in an international midfielder.

Tottenham make enquiry for "underrated" Inter midfielder

That is according to TEAMtalk, who report that Spurs are one of the sides to have enquired about Inter midfielder Davide Frattesi this winter.

The Italian is keen to leave San Siro due to a lack of game time, and there is reported interest from English trio Manchester United, Newcastle United and Spurs as well as Roma.

Valued at €50m (£41.5m), a deal would likely be low on Tottenham’s list of January priorities given their current situation with injuries, but it would be in keeping with Postecoglou’s desire to strengthen his midfield, with the Lilywhites having been one of the sides keen on signing Conor Gallagher from Chelsea last summer.

Any deal would likely have to wait until the summer, with Inter wanting “to keep their players until at least after the Club World Cup this summer”, despite reports elsewhere suggesting that Frattesi himself is open to an exit sooner.

Often overlooked in Serie A, Frattesi was dubbed “underrated” by Italian Football TV, who added that he “always performs for club and country” despite “not getting the minutes he deserves”.
