Newcastle take on Liverpool this weekend, and Rafael Benitez should take a gamble to turn the Reds’ biggest strength into a weakness.

Liverpool and Manchester City have run away with the league this season because their squads have no weakness, but that doesn’t mean they are equally strong in all areas.

One area that Liverpool clearly have the upper hand in is at the back, particularly out wide, where Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been nothing short of sensational throughout the campaign.

The pair have combined for a remarkable 24 assists this season, and are undoubtedly the biggest source of creativity in a team that does not rely on its midfield players to break the opposition down, instead using the full-backs basically as wingers when Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane move more central.

So how can Benitez stop this? Well, it all starts with the return of one man.

Jonjo time

Jonjo Shelvey has been left behind and forgotten at Newcastle this season. The former Red was nailed on throughout most of Benitez’s tenure, but picked up an injury before Christmas and never made it back into the team.

Now though, with Sean Longstaff injured, Shelvey is the one player on Tyneside capable of turning Liverpool’s overlapping wide men from a strength into a weakness.

Even with Miguel Almiron missing and potentially Ayoze Perez out injured too, Shelvey’s ability to spread perfect passes 60 yards across the St. James’ Park turf will either force Alexander-Arnold and Robertson to retreat, or cause countless counter-attacking opportunities.

Benitez may not have quality in reserve for his injured front men, but he does have speed, and Christian Atsu and Kenedy are more than capable of latching on to Shelvey’s passes and whipping the ball immediately towards Salomon Rondon.

Not only will this strategy give the Magpies and out ball when they are under what will no doubt be immense pressure from the title-chasing Merseysiders, it could just be the thing that causes their guests’ downfall, putting the nail in the coffin of their quest to catch Manchester City.

Jonjo Shelvey was an unused substitute in Newcastle United’s 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool on Saturday night, and there has been a lot of speculation surrounding the midfielder’s long-term future at St James’ Park.

The Magpies missed his creativity against the Reds, though, and there is still a role to play for the former Charlton Athletic youngster moving forward.

It was not a surprise that Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez left Shelvey out of his starting XI for the clash with Liverpool on Saturday.

Indeed, Ki Sung-Yong joined Isaac Hayden in the middle of the park as the home side looked to outwork their title-challenging opponents.

Ki and Hayden both did a decent job in the engine room, but there is no question that the Magpies missed that little bit of creativity in the areas behind Salomon Rondon.

That was particularly true with Miguel Almiron missing through injury, whilst a 5-4-1 formation meant that three central midfielders was not an option.

Shelvey would have been desperate to face his former club on Saturday; it wasn’t to be, but the midfielder can still have a big role for Newcastle moving forward.

A season to forget

It has not been a good season for Shelvey, who has appeared in just 15 of Newcastle’s 37 Premier League matches this term.

Just one goal and one assist in 17 games in all competitions shows his struggles, and his 73 minutes against Brighton & Hove Albion on April 27 was the most that he had played in a single league game since the end of October.

A niggling thigh injury has harmed Shelvey’s campaign, but there is no question that Benitez wants more work from the 27-year-old when Newcastle are without the ball.

On his day, Shelvey can be absolutely devastating. There are few players in the Premier League with his range of passing, whilst he is certainly capable of hitting the eight to 10 mark in terms of goals each season.

It has been suggested that the 6ft ace could move on this summer, but he is a player still capable of playing a huge role for Newcastle, who are not exactly a team full of forward-thinking central midfielders.

قال المدافع البالغ من العمر 58 عامًا أثناء ظهوره في برنامج “Tiki Taka”: “رونالدو جاهل”.

وأضاف: “لقد كان في إيطاليا منذ عامين ولم يتعلم بعد التحدث بلغتنا، يستخدم الإسبانية للتعبير عن نفسه، إنه لا يحترم زملائه في الفريق أو الإيطاليين”.

Tyler Roberts can take Leeds to the Premier League. You have to believe. Obviously, it’s going to be a tough battle, but his creativity could get them over the line this season.

Marcelo Bielsa has backed Kemar Roofe (as per the Yorkshire Evening Post) to hit his peak for the play-offs but it could be his teammate who’s the real shining light. Indeed, despite earning just one point from their last four games, Leeds have the ability to go all the way as long as Tyler Roberts steps up.

Indeed, the same report claims the Welsh international is hopeful of being fit for the next few games as Leeds dream of a Premier League return.

Roofe has struggled recently and it’s seen the whole team suffer with him. But Marcelo Bielsa’s side can’t afford to rely on him too heavily for goals, so Roberts will have a huge say on which division they play in next season.

From 28 games he’s scored just three goals and made six assists. That’s not promotion form, but the play-offs are different. His creativity and vision can be a real threat in the final third and the opposition know it. It’s time for him to prove his worth.

Yes, he’s only 20-years-old and he’s not expected to stand out at that age, but he certainly has the ability to stand up and be counted. The quality he’s shown will be a huge boost for Leeds’ promotion chances despite the squad’s well-documented poor form.

The fact he can play right across the front three gives Bielsa the option to swap him around quickly if things aren’t working in the play-offs too. Roofe may return to form, but if he doesn’t, they have a very capable Roberts to take over and guide them to promotion.

Wednesday proved to be a horrendous day to be a Leeds United supporter, didn’t it?

After beating Derby County 1-0 in the first-leg of their play-off semi-final last Saturday, the Whites would have been supremely confident of prevailing in the return fixture at Elland Road.

Yet with expectations to deliver at an all-time high for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, they produced a disastrous defensive display which resulted in the Rams securing a 4-2 victory.

Whereas the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Stuart Dallas delivered impressive individual performances, the same cannot be said for Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi.

Tasked with trying to keep the likes of Jack Marriott, Mason Mount and Harry Wilson quiet, the central defenders were utterly dreadful throughout the clash.

With Cooper directly at fault for two of the goals and Berardi receiving a ridiculous red card in the second-half, Marcelo Bielsa must have been cursing the fact that Pontus Jansson wasn’t fit enough to start in the clash.

A regular for the Whites during the 2018/19 campaign, the £5.4m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) had returned to training ahead of the second-leg yet he had to settle for a place on the substitute’s bench.

Given Jansson’s outstanding form this year, it could be argued that if Bielsa had taken the risk on Wednesday to play him, Leeds may very well have been preparing for a visit to Wembley Stadium in 10 days time as he would have been a considerable upgrade on Berardi.

Yet by taking the safe option, the Argentine ultimately created the foundations for disaster at Elland Road which has ultimately culminated in the Whites facing the prospect of yet another year in the Championship.

وتستعد قطر لاستضافة البطولة القارية للأندية للمرة الثانية على التوالي، بعد استضافة نسخة 2019 التي فاز بها ليفربول.

وكان من المقرر أن تنطلق النسخة القادمة في ديسمبر 2020 ولكن تم تأجيلها حتى فبراير 2021 بسبب جائحة COVID-19 التي أثرت على التقويمات الرياضية في جميع أنحاء العالم.

وأصبح من المقرر أن تقام بطولة كأس العالم للأندية 2020 في قطر في الفترة من 1 إلى 11 فبراير من العام المقبل 2021، وتماشيًا مع بروتوكول “فيفا” الدولي للمباريات، سيوفر “فيفا” والبلد المضيف الضمانات المطلوبة لصحة وسلامة جميع المشاركين.

وذكر الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم في بيان أن “بطولة كأس العالم للأندية FIFA قطر 2020، التي كان من المقرر إجراؤها في ديسمبر، تعرضت للتأثير المدمر للوباء على بطولات الأندية القارية للاتحادات التي تشكل مسار الحدث”.

وقد تأهل بالفعل فريقان للبطولة، وسينضم بايرن ميونخ بطل أوروبا إلى بطل دوري نجوم قطر الدحيل ممثل الدولة المضيفة.

كما سيتأهل إلى البطولة أبطال بطولات الأندية القارية من CONCACAF (أمريكا الشمالية والوسطى) و CONMEBOL (أمريكا الجنوبية) و AFC (آسيا) و OFC (أوقيانوسيا) و CAF (إفريقيا)، ومن المتوقع الانتهاء من المنافسات القارية المعنية في الأشهر الثلاثة المقبلة.

قطر أثبتت بالفعل قدرتها على تنظيم بطولات رفيعة المستوى خلال الوباء، بعد أن استضافت 39 مباراة في المنطقة الغربية في دوري أبطال آسيا 2020، ومن المقرر أيضًا أن يستضيفوا 44 مباراة في المنطقة الشرقية في نوفمبر وديسمبر باستثناء النهائي.

تم تنفيذ بروتوكولات اختبار صارمة أثناء استضافة البطولة، كما أعادت قطر استئناف دوريها المحلي وسمح لعدد محدود من المشجعين بحضور المباريات بعد اتباع إجراءات التباعد الاجتماعي.

يذكر أن ممثل إفريقيا في كأس العالم للأندية هذا الموسم، سيكون واحدًا من قطبي الكرة المصرية، حيث يقام نهائي إفريقيا بين فريقي الأهلي والزمالك، والمقرر له يوم 27 من شهر نوفمر الجاري.

We are now a whole week away from reported talks between Benitez and the Magpies hierarchy as the saga regarding his long-term future at St James’ Park rumbles on.

There have been no official updates on him staying, which is only fuelling speculation another club could be ready to appoint him ahead of the new season.

As reported by The Scottish Sun on Thursday, he was at one point this week the favourite with bookmakers to land the permanent manager role at Celtic Park after more fluctuations in the market.

For many Celtic supporters he continues to be the outstanding choice, even if it seems unlikely he’ll switch from the English Premier League to the Scottish Premiership.

Fans are craving a ‘big name’ appointment that can maintain the standards of the Brendan Rodgers era and Benitez fits the bill in every department.
