Leeds United have failed to score a goal from open play in their first four matches in the Premier League, after their 1-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Lukas Nmecha’s penalty, given for a controversial handball by James Tarkowski, in the 1-0 win over Everton is the only goal scored by the Whites so far this season.

After the defeat to Fulham, Daniel Farke told reporters that it is up to his wide players to prove critics wrong and show that they belong in the Premier League by delivering on the pitch.

The German head coach said: “James, Harrison, Aaronson with us when we were relegated and they were called hopeless. They still have a point to prove these judgments are not right. We have this type of offensive players and I’m looking forward to improving them, but we shouldn’t expect miracles.”

This comes after Farke, himself, claimed that it would be “difficult” for Leeds to avoid relegation if they did not add more quality to their attack in the transfer window, which the club then failed to do.

The Championship champions did not get the winger signing, or signings, that they wanted, and Brenden Aaronson is one of the players who must, now, step up and prove his quality in the Premier League.

Why Brenden Aaronson needs to step up for Leeds

The USA international is in an interesting position because the manager has changed the formation from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3 this season, which has taken away the attacking midfielder’s main role as a number ten.

Per Transfermarkt, Aaronson has started 168 matches in his career as an attacking midfielder, 32 as a left midfielder, and 16 as a central midfielder. Yet, all of his appearances so far this season have come on the right of a 4-3-3.

This means that Farke is essentially playing the former RB Salzburg star out of position in the Premier League, which is a division he has already struggled in whilst playing in his favoured role.

Aaronson only managed one goal in 36 appearances in the top-flight in the 2022/23 campaign, thanks to a ‘shocker’ from Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, and underperformed his xG of 3.86.

The 24-year-old attacker’s performances in the Championship for Leeds last season did not suggest that he was likely to make the step up and prove people wrong after his dismal showings a few years ago.

As you can see in the table above, Aaronson did not deliver a single goal or assist in ten matches against the other teams inside the top six in the Championship, which shows that he struggled to perform against the better teams in the league.

All of this illustrates why there is a big need for the USA international to step up in the coming weeks, because all the signs point to him not being good enough for what Leeds need right now.

Meanwhile, Farke allowed Largie Ramazani to depart Elland Road and join Valencia on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window, despite his side’s lack of quality in the wide department.

It is fair to say that, albeit it is very early in the season, the decision to ditch the Belgian winger from the squad this summer is already looking like a poorly judged one.

Why Leeds should have kept Largie Ramazani

Farke should have kept Largie Ramazani in the building because he is the kind of winger who could have suited playing in the Premier League in a team that will need to rely on a lot of counter-attacking chances.

The Whites will not be as dominant on the ball as they were in the Championship against weaker opposition. This means that there is more space in behind to exploit when they win the ball back and look to test their opponents in behind.

Ramazani would have been perfect for that. In fact, talent scout Jacek Kulig once described the forward as a “counter attacking weapon”, hailing him as “explosive”, “electric” and a “mini Vinicius Jr”.

Aaronson, meanwhile, lacks electric pace and is not, as aforementioned, a natural winger, which means he does not offer as much speed or direct play on the break.

Their respective output at the top end of the pitch in the Championship last season also suggests that Ramazani had more to offer to the team in the way of quality, as well as his physical attributes.

As you can see in the table above, the Belgian whiz excelled in limited minutes for Leeds in the second tier, with a staggering haul of 0.92 goals and assists per 90.

Per Sofascore, Ramazani delivered six goals and two assists in just 807 minutes of action in the Championship, starting seven games, which shows that he was incredibly effective in front of goal.

To rub salt in the wound, the 24-year-old star created a ‘big chance’ and delivered an assist for Valencia on his debut for the club against Getafe in LaLiga before the international break.

This is further evidence of his ability to make an impact at the very top level, which is something Aaronson has failed to do, and shows why Leeds messed up by allowing him to leave.

After four matches, no player in Farke’s squad has an assist to their name in the Premier League, whilst Ramazani has one assist in one game in another major European league.

Leeds supporters may, rightly, wonder why the Belgian talent was allowed to depart on loan whilst Aaronson has been shifted out of position in a league he has already struggled in.

Watching Marcus Rashford score an emphatic brace for Barcelona in the Champions League would have been a bitter pill to swallow for many Manchester United fans.

On the one hand, the England international is a cherished, homegrown part of the club, still a member of the club, in fact, and only out on loan with La Blaugrana. On the other hand, his permanent departure at the end of the campaign feels rather likely.

The 27-year-old’s relationship with Ruben Amorim quickly disintegrated last season, and then he was shipped out to Premier League rivals Aston Villa for a short-term stint.

Having sold Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea too, the Red Devils perhaps have something of a shortage of widemen, even having completed impressive summer deals for Prem-proven duo Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

INEOS probably needed to ship out more stragglers than they did this summer, but they were faced with a huge task. And, in fairness, Mbeumo may well have the goalscoring ability to replace Rashford at the Theatre of Dreams.

Both Cunha and Mbeumo have entered the fray at a tumultuous period, but it is their quality which will help United steer through, having both been so potent in the Premier League last season.

However, Man United didn’t get it all right during the summer window, and they still need to get rid of several stars who have run past their sell-by dates.

The player of significance here has been at Old Trafford for quite some time, but just as Mbeumo’s £150k-per-week salary reflects the new, streamlined wage structure INEOS are trying to implement, so too does this undeservedly matching pay packet underline the failings of the past decade.

One of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s principal priorities upon assuming co-ownership at Manchester United was to rewrite the financial books and stop the rot that had led to incremental losses across an extended period.

The 33-year-old Casemiro, taking home £350k per week, is probably the most obvious member of the first team who needs to move on sooner rather than later, but the man in question here is Luke Shaw, whose £150k-per-week wage sits level with Mbeumo’s.

Had Shaw enjoyed a more fortuitous career on the fitness front, this likely wouldn’t be a conversation. When United signed the left-back from Southampton for £27m in 2014, making him the most expensive teenager of all time, it was widely recognised that the post-Fergie era would still see the development of some of the country’s finest prospects.

But Shaw’s has been a rocky road, and it may well be coming to an end, having been deployed by Amorim as the left prong of a three-part central defence, starting all four of United’s Premier League matches so far.

According to Sofascore, he has only won 44% of his ground duels, which hardly speaks of the defensive security the outfit needs to rise once again.

Moreover, given that Shaw’s incessant fitness issues have permitted more than 20 starting berths in any given top-flight season just twice across the span of his career, it’s hardly surprising that noise of a potential departure to welcome a new, hungry talent on a more affordable wage is rising.

Indeed, reports from the summer suggested that INEOS were open to the stalwart’s departure, with clubs from the Saudi Pro League interested, but nothing came to fruition. Still, it suggests that he could be shipped on for a modest fee next year, especially if he maintains a degree of fitness.

Content creator Dev Bajwa put it in no uncertain terms: “Luke Shaw should not have been playing at this football club for the past two seasons.”

He might be right. Aged 30, the England international has spent the lion’s share of his professional career in Manchester, playing 202 games for the club in total and notably winning silverware such as the Europa League and the League Cup (injuries prevented him from earning a medal when Erik ten Hag’s United won the FA Cup in 2024).

Shaw might have big ambitions, but sadly, he isn’t at the level required for a club who might demand a place challenging for the Premier League title, but presently face a battle to secure a place in any level of European competition next term.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of the Manchester derby last weekend, pundit Gary Neville conceded that his countryman was “nowhere near it”, and the question now lingers as to whether he is fit for purpose in Amorim’s three-man backline.

Having entered the penultimate year of his deal at the club, it seems unlikely that technical director Jason Wilcox would renew terms for a struggling star who has been around for an age but hardly produces the consistency of performance to warrant a salary in line with a new superstar such as Mbeumo.

Shaw can hold his head high, especially due to all the fitness troubles he has been plagued by, but it’s time for the Three Lions star to move on.

The ECB made a commitment before November’s mega auction that centrally contracted England players would be fully available for the IPL in 2025, which meant Bethell was not included in their Test squad to face Zimbabwe from May 22. But that commitment covered the IPL’s original dates, and the final has now been pushed back to June 3.England named a 16-man squad on Tuesday for their three-match ODI series against West Indies, which starts on May 29. The IPL’s group stage now runs until May 27, with the playoffs starting on May 29 and running until the final on June 3. GT, RCB and MI are all well-placed to qualify for the final stages.The ECB did not provide a definitive answer when contacted on Tuesday night. “No Objection Certificates have been granted based on the original IPL dates, so we’ll need to review any potential extensions, particularly in relation to any clash with the final white-ball squad,” an ECB spokesperson said when the squad was announced.”We’re keen to support the IPL and the BCCI in getting the schedule up and running, and to facilitate players’ return should they choose to go back.
