Leeds beat Middlesbrough 1-0 thanks to Daniel James' early goal on Tuesday evening. However, the Championship leaders saw two goals incorrectly ruled out, as Ao Tanaka and Patrick Bamford both had strikes chalked off for what the officials believed were offsides.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Leeds have posted Bamford's goal on X, which clearly shows that the striker timed his run perfectly and was not offside when Wilfried Gnonto sent him through on goal. It was all the more galling for the one-time England international, as he has not scored this season, and the clash with Boro was his 200th appearance in a Leeds shirt. Still, despite Tanaka's tap-in at the back post from a corner also being ruled out, Leeds have moved back to the top of the Championship table, where they sit level on points with second-placed Burnley.

On X, Leeds first posted about Tanaka's goal and shared the video, writing: "Still worth a watch" alongside a shrugging emoji.

Later, posting Bamford's strike, they added: "Another perfectly good goal".

Chahar, Dhawan, Gill lead India's rout of Zimbabwe

Chahar starred with three wickets on comeback while openers put on an unbroken 192-run stand to steer India home

Vishal Dikshit18-Aug-2022Deepak Chahar’s probing new-ball spell on his impressive return after six months followed by a century stand between in-form openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill hurtled Zimbabwe to their 13th straight ODI loss to India. Chahar’s swing, Prasidh Krishna’s bounce and Axar Patel’s accuracy helped them bag three wickets apiece to bowl the hosts out for 189 before Dhawan and Gill hunted the target down with nearly 20 overs to spare.India’s pace bowlers utilised the early moisture and swing to trouble Zimbabwe’s top order, which had hardly scored against Bangladesh too. Chahar and Co. reduced Zimbabwe to 31 for 4 and then 110 for 8 before a counter-attacking ninth-wicket stand of 70 off 65 balls between Brad Evans and Richard Ngarava lifted them to a somewhat respectable total.Chahar started gingerly before he sent back the hosts’ top order in an opening burst of 7-0-27-3, in which he swung the ball both ways and had Innocent Kaia and Tadiwanashe Marumani caught behind by the ninth over. Seven balls after Marumani fell in the ninth over, the returning Sean Williams lasted just three balls when he edged Mohammed Siraj to first slip. Five balls later, Chahar’s late outswing beat Wessley Madhevere to trap him lbw for 5, and Zimbabwe were four down in 10.1 overs. It was down to Chakabva and Raza again. Chakabva instilled some confidence when he bashed three fours in the space of eight balls, and both batters used the DRS to get on-field lbw decisions overturned off Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav, respectively. But Prasidh’s double-strike dented Zimbabwe further when he had Raza caught at slip and Ryan Burl threw his wicket away by holing out on the leg side to leave the hosts reeling on 83 for 6.When Axar struck in successive overs by removing Chakabva and Luke Jongwe, it looked like Zimbabwe would be skittled for under 150, but Ngarava and Evans fought back with a flurry of boundaries off both pace and spin as conditions improved for batting. They started by rotating the strike and then switched to clean hitting to force bowling changes on India. Evans was more attacking of the two whereas Ngarava started slowly but picked up pace as the stand neared the 50-mark and even swung Axar for a massive six over long-on before he was bowled by Prasidh in the 40th over. Axar took the last wicket, which was also his 50th in ODIs.An asking rate of under four an over in favourable batting conditions was hardly going to trouble an Indian batting line-up. Dhawan and Gill were cautious against the moving ball and hardly took any risk early on. Dhawan started the chase with two fours and hogged the strike in the first powerplay in which he scored 24 out of India’s 43 and Zimbabwe had already gifted 13 extras by then.Dhawan was beaten a few times by Victor Nyauchi’s outswingers early on, but he also attacked with pulls and cuts whenever the bowlers pitched it short. He also got a life on 32 in the 13th over when he was dropped at square leg off Williams. He soon reached his 38th ODI fifty, his third in four innings, by when Gill had also opened up with three fours in the square region on the off side in one Evans over.Gill started attacking more when he neared his fifty and brought up the landmark by dispatching two full tosses from Burl through the covers in the 25th over. He started the next over with a four and a six through and over midwicket that took India to 150, and he even overtook Dhawan in the next over. As boundaries came more easily, Dhawan hit the winning runs by pulling Evans behind square to remain unbeaten on 81 with Gill on 82 not out.

Toby Roland-Jones rocks Leicestershire hopes with rapid three wickets

Middlesex in sight of victory which will put them in contention for Division Two title

ECB Reporters Network22-Sep-2022Middlesex have put themselves within sight of a victory that will put them squarely in contention for the Division Two title after Leicestershire’s fragile batting undid their good work with the ball on day three of their LV= Insurance County Championship match.Skipper Callum Parkinson took 4 for 69 and young legspinner Rehan Ahmed a career-best 3 for 50 as Middlesex collapsed from 209 for 3 to 271 all out in their second innings, losing their last seven wickets for 62 after Mark Stoneman (81) and Max Holden (91) had put on 165 for the fourth wicket. It left Leicestershire with a fourth-innings target of 275 to record their first win of the season. Instead they are in deep trouble at 13 for 4 going into the final day. After leaders Nottinghamshire’s heavy defeat at Worcester, a win here would take Middlesex into the final round of matches next week in second place just nine points behind. Middlesex face Worcestershire at New Road, with Nottinghamshire at home to Durham.Leicestershire had achieved their first objective for the day by finishing just three behind on first innings after Ed Barnes and Chris Wright added 21 runs to their overnight total.Toby Roland-Jones prised out the last wicket when Barnes top-edged a pull to be caught behind for a best-of-season 46, the Middlesex seamer improving his figures to 4 for 66 and 59 first-class wickets for the season. Another five will match his career-best tally of 64 in 2012.Leicestershire were in the ascendancy as Middlesex’s nascent second innings lost three wickets in the first 10 overs, mainly as a consequence of Parkinson’s bold decision to give his own left-arm spin a try with the new ball just five overs old.By then, Middlesex had already lost Sam Robson to a fine catch at second slip by Colin Ackermann off Michael Finan. Parkinson struck with his seventh ball as Steven Eskinazi’s paddle-sweep looped to short leg. When he made one bounce and turn to have a groping Pieter Malan caught at slip in his next over, Middlesex were 44 for 3, just 47 runs in front. But as Stoneman and Holden set their minds to scoring quickly in the hope of taking the game away from their opponents, Leicestershire’s front-line seamers found it hard to apply the brake. By lunch, Middlesex were 108 for 3, 111 in front. The fourth-wicket pair added 50 in 10 overs and maintained that rate of scoring, Holden reaching his personal half-century off 48 balls, Stoneman his off 74.Parkinson almost had Stoneman on 51 with a difficult chance to short leg at 139 for 3, but the pitch was becoming increasingly unresponsive and Middlesex were now in control of their destiny.By tea, their lead had been extended to 247, although the session had also seen Leicestershire fight back with three wickets.Holden, often easy on the eye as he gathered 13 boundaries, departed on 91 after uncharacteristically poking at a wide ball from Tom Scriven outside off stump, caught behind by a diving Harry Swindells.Stoneman went to sweep Louis Kimber, thus far an occasional off-spinner, but missed and was bowled behind his legs for 81. When Ryan Higgins was bowled by Ahmed, failing to pick the youngster’s googly, Leicestershire felt they were back in the game, in theory at least.Indeed, the momentum stayed with them after tea as Middlesex’s collapse accelerated, their last four wickets tumbling for nine runs as John Simpson, sweeping, was bowled by one from Parkinson that turned back a long way and Luke Hollman heaved a horribly mistimed pull straight to mid-on.Parkinson picked up his fourth wicket when another super delivery, perhaps his best of the day, beat Ethan Bamber’s push forward to clip off stump, before a Roland-Jones miscue to long-on gave Ahmed his third. It left Leicestershire to chase 275 to win, not the most forbidding target but a formidable one for a team of their thin resources. If they could have found a way through the last 16 overs of the day without mishap, they might have given themselves a chance.Instead, Tim Murtagh dismissed Sam Evans leg before with his second ball, Sol Budinger, off the mark with a thick outside edge for four, was bowled off an inside edge by Roland-Jones, who then saw off Kimber, bowled by a full delivery and Ahmed, dragging on one to his leg stump, leaving them 13 for 4 inside the first six.

Moyes now identifies "outstanding" £15m midfielder as first Everton target

Everton manager David Moyes has now identified an “outstanding” midfielder as his first Goodison transfer target, according to a report.

New arrivals expected at Goodison Park

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that he expects at least one new arrival through the door at Goodison Park before the February 3rd deadline, telling GiveMeSport: “For sure, Everton will do more. I expect Everton to do one or two signings from now on, and for sure, Nuamah remains a name on their list, they wanted him in the summer, that was not possible.”

It has been a quiet window for the Toffees up to this point, but as stated by Romano, they have been pursuing a move for Lyon’s Ernest Nuamah, who has been a target since the summer.

Bringing in a new winger is seemingly a priority for the Merseyside club, having also made contact to enquire about Sporting CP’s Marcus Edwards, with the move for Nuamah hitting a snag.

Moyes now personally driving Everton move for "talented" £40m midfielder

The Toffees boss has sounded out a deal for “one of the most talented players in England”.

ByDominic Lund Jan 23, 2025

Up to this point, Everton have been chasing players they identified as targets prior to Moyes’ arrival, but the new manager has now started to make his own recommendations regarding transfer policy.

That is according to a report from The Telegraph, which states the Scot has now identified Sunderland’s Dan Neil as his first target, having been an admirer of the central midfielder for quite some time. Neil was an academy player for the Black Cats when Moyes was in charge, and the former Sunderland boss has followed his career ever since, but it may be difficult to orchestrate a reunion this month.

The 23-year-old is a key player for the Championship promotion-hopefuls, so they want a fee of at least £15m, as selling him could derail their chances of returning to the Premier League.

Luton Town's Elijah Adebayo in action withSunderland's DanielNeil

Not only are Everton keen on bringing in a new central midfielder this month, but they also want to sign a left-back and striker, so they could be busy before the February 3rd deadline.

Neil is ready for Premier League football

The Englishman has been impressing in a Sunderland shirt for quite some time, having been lauded as “outstanding” by reporter Philip Buckingham back in December 2022, and he has been almost ever-present in the Championship this season.

Given that the South Shields-born midfielder is captain, and an integral part of the team, it is difficult to envisage the Black Cats sanctioning his departure this month, however, and he may not want to leave his boyhood club during their push for promotion.

At the end of the season, Neil will have just one year remaining on his contract, and if Sunderland fail to win promotion they may be forced to cash-in for a lower fee, so it may be wise for Everton to hold off until then.

Moyes is clearly a big fan of the £15m-rated maestro, having tracked his career for quite some time, so it is worth revisiting a deal in the summer, considering there is not a pressing need to sign a central midfielder this month.

Revealed: Why Aston Villa missed out on £365k-p/w trio before Disasi loan

Aston Villa were one of the Premier League’s busiest clubs in the January transfer window, but failed to land almost as many of their targets as they ultimately signed, it has been revealed.

Aston Villa's transfer window

Unai Emery welcomed five new faces to his squad in the January transfer window, though only two arrived on permanent deals at Villa Park. The biggest deal of their window saw the Villans agree a loan deal to sign Marcus Rashford for the second half of the 24/25 campaign, with the club agreeing to pay a minimum of 75% of the forward’s wages and up to 90% of them based on performances in a Villa shirt.

Elsewhere, they also bolstered their attack with the permanent arrival of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, who set the club back £21m, and Marco Asensio arrived on loan on transfer deadline day.

Though they ultimately lost Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr, Villa fans will be hoping that the three attacking additions should more than cover his position and that of little-used forward Jaden Philogene, who was sold to Ipswich Town six months after returning to Villa.

There were also new faces added at the back with both Diego Carlos and Kosta Nedeljković departing the club, the former sealing a permanent exit and the Serbian defender moving to RB Leipzig on loan with an option to buy.

In their place, Villa added Andres Garcia from the Spanish second-tier, before pulling off a late loan move to sign Axel Disasi from Chelsea to add a centre-back to their ranks. Coming in the final hours of transfer deadline day, Disasi was the culmination of a long search for a new defender that had begun much earlier, in a very different place.

Why Aston Villa missed out on trio before signing Disasi

Now, The Athletic have provided some insight into Villa’s attempts to land a new defender, and revealed that the club had actually tried to sign three alternatives before they landed on the former Monaco man.

The first of those was Loic Bade, who they submitted several bids for and even met Sevilla’s asking price to sign the Frenchman (£21.6m). However, it is claimed that Bade ‘had doubts concerning game time and the presence of Ezri Konsa in the right centre-back position’, which meant that he opted not to move to the Midlands and instead remained with the Andalusian side, where he still has four years left to run on his £68,000 a week deal.

Loic Bade for Sevilla.

Following that, Villa briefly attempted to sign PSG outcast Milan Skriniar, but were put off by his mammoth £264,000 a week wages, though his move to Turkey has since seen those wages slashed.

Finally, Emery’s side began exploring a deal to sign Juan Foyth, and Emery was keen to reunite with the former defender after their time spent together with Villarreal. However, that appetite was not shared by the hierarchy, who were concerned by the Argentine’s injury record and, as a result, “no agreement was close” even though Foyth is down to the final 18 months of his £33k a week deal in Spain.

In the end, Villa opted to keep their financial powder dry for the summer window with a low cost loan move.

Arsenal women's player ratings vs Lyon: The Gunners are going to the Champions League final! Alessia Russo and Mariona Caldentey among the heroes as eight-time European champions self-combust

Renee Slegers' side overturned a 2-1 deficit from the first leg of their semi-final, stunning the French giants to set up a huge Barcelona clash

Arsenal will play in their first Women's Champions League final since 2007 after shocking eight-time winners Lyon in France, winning 4-1 in their semi-final second leg to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the Emirates Stadium. The hosts had won all of their last 11 ties at this stage of the competition, a run which stretched back 16 years, but they were dominated and picked apart by the Gunners as that streak came to an emphatic end, with the English side set to face reigning champions Barcelona in Lisbon at the end of May for a chance to win this competition for the second time.

It took just five minutes for Arsenal to break the deadlock, as a surprise mistake from goalkeeper Christiane Endler led to Chloe Kelly's corner ricocheting around the box and eventually bouncing in off the Lyon shot-stopper herself. It set the tone for a sloppy and error-strewn display from the team that has won this competition more often than any other, with awful defending capitalised on by Alessia Russo for the Gunners' third and Caitlin Foord pouncing on a slip from Vanessa Gilles to bag the fourth.

But there was also a lot of quality on show from Arsenal, the stand-out moment undoubtedly Mariona Caldentey's sweet strike on the stroke of half-time which doubled their lead. The visitors controlled the midfield, were sharp in their spells of possession and extremely clinical in front of goal as they took down a giant of the European game.

Their reward is a shot at another, with Barcelona to be their opponents in next month's final in Lisbon after their 8-2 aggregate win over Chelsea. It'll be an incredible challenge, but Sunday was too – and Renee Slegers' side overcame that one remarkably.

Had a couple of really shaky moments when coming for corners and was lucky not to be punished.

Emily Fox (8/10):

Dealt really well with Chawinga and kept her quiet until the winger was subbed off before the hour. Then did similar with Diani.

Leah Williamson (7/10):

Had a couple of sloppy moments but generally moved the ball well, kickstarting attacks with her front-footed approach.

Steph Catley (7/10):

Fared well in her duels and was tidy at the back, overcoming an early knock to be solid.

Katie McCabe (7/10):

Enjoyed mixed fortunes in a great individual battle with Diani, coming out on top more often than most would. Offered a great outlet going forward, as usual.

Kim Little (8/10):

Got stuck in plenty out of possession and was extremely influential in it with her eye for a pass and tricky footwork.

Mariona Caldentey (8/10):

Continued her superb form with another brilliant display, with the stand-out moment that sublime strike into the top corner.

Frida Maanum (7/10):

Had nice moments with neat touches to contribute to a strong attacking display in a subtle way. Determination to win the ball went a long way for the third goal.

Chloe Kelly (7/10):

Wasn't too lively in open play but delivered great set-pieces, including the corner that provided Lyon's opener.

Alessia Russo (8/10):

Showcased some nice touches in and around the box, teeing up Caldentey for her strike, and then was clinical as ever to make it 3-0.

Caitlin Foord (8/10):

Had a lot of joy in the individual battle with her Australia team-mate Carpenter, regularly causing the full-back problems and getting in behind. Great finish for Arsenal's fourth.

Spurs nearly signed gem for £450k, now he’s worth way more than Son & Kane

Tottenham Hotspur has been the home to countless attacking talents over the years, many of which have captured the hearts of the fanbase during their time in North London.

Gareth Bale joined the club as a youngster from Southampton, originally as a left-back, but rapidly showcased that he was more than capable of starring within the attacking third.

The Welshman was known for his wand of a left foot, scoring endless strikes from outside the box, before leaving in an £85m deal to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.

Striker Teddy Sheringham joined Spurs from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 1992, a deal that looked to be worth every penny, finding the back of the net on 125 occasions.

However, there was one pair within the first team that made history in the Premier League during their respective periods as players with the Lilywhites.

Son & Kane’s stats together at Spurs

Heung-min Son and Harry Kane formed an excellent partnership together at Spurs, combining on countless occasions in front of goal and helping the club achieve some phenomenal results.

The duo combined for 47 goals between one another during their time together in the first-team, the highest tally of any pair in Premier League history.

However, the Englishman would depart in the summer of 2023, joining Bayern Munich and subsequently ending their phenomenal partnership – but leaving as the club’s record scorer, with an unbelievable record of 280 goals.

As for Son, he still remains a key player under Ange Postecoglou, but has been unable to produce the goods without his partner, only scoring six times in the league throughout this campaign.

However, despite the impact of the aforementioned talents, the club may regret not signing one player who’s cemented himself as one of the very best stars in European football over the last few years.

The player who’s now worth more than Son & Kane combined

Despite the talents of the pair, they were unable to fire the Lilywhites to any trophies, with the drought now entering its 17th year after their League Cup triumph in 2008.

However, they certainly would’ve been aided in their attempts had they secured a deal for Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé back during his spell in Ligue 1 with Monaco.

It’s known that Spurs tried to sign the forward after his breakthrough with the French outfit, being quoted a fee in the region of £450k, but were ultimately unable to convince him to leave his homeland.

It’s safe to say he’s gone on to achieve incredible things in the game, starring for his boyhood club, scoring 27 times in his 60 appearances before joining PSG for a whopping £150m in the summer of 2017.

Such a move to the capital would catapult him into the limelight, being a leading talent for the Ligue 1 giants and catching the eye with his displays, becoming one of the best attackers in Europe.

He ended up scoring 256 times in just 310 appearances for the Ligue 1 giants, with the thought of him partnering up front with Son and Kane one that could’ve certainly ended the club’s long wait for a trophy.

He’s since moved to Real Madrid this summer, taking his career to the next level, and strengthening Carlo Ancelotti’s side – who are already up there with the best in Europe given their 15 Champions League titles.

The forward has continued his goalscoring form under the Italian, scoring 24 times in his 36 appearances for his new side, creating a deadly partnership with Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior – showing the Lilywhites what could’ve been had they signed him.

As a result of his tremendous displays over the last few years, Mbappé is now valued at £133m by Transfermarkt – a figure higher than that of Son and Kane combined, with the pair only worth a combined £105m.

The pair gave Spurs fans a whole heap of memories during their time featuring together in North London, with their record in front of goal cementing them as one of the best pairs in English top-flight history.

However, there’s no denying the club could’ve reached the next level had they pushed and persisted in a move to land Mbappé during his early years in Monaco.

Gareth Batty named permanent head coach at Surrey

Former spinner led club to Championship title after taking over on interim basis

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2022Gareth Batty, who led Surrey to the County Championship title as interim head coach, has been appointed to the role full time. He succeeds Vikram Solanki, who left at the start of the year to take charge of IPL franchise Gujarat Titans.Batty only retired from playing at the end of the 2021 season, after a lengthy career representing Surrey, Worcestershire and England, and initially moved on to the coaching staff as one of Solanki’s assistants. After taking charge of the first team, he oversaw an impressive campaign that saw the London club win their first Championship since 2018.”I’m honoured to have been given the opportunity to be head coach at this great club on a permanent basis,” Batty said. “This year has been an incredible season and a steep learning curve for me as a coach but I have absolutely loved every second of it.”The hard work put in by the coaching staff and the players was crucial in the success this year and we’re looking to get straight back to it as pre-season begins. There’s a huge amount of potential in this group of players and I’m excited to get going again with our eyes firmly set on more success in 2023.”Surrey won eight of their 14 Championship games and were unbeaten until the final round of the season, by which point that had already secured the pennant. One of Batty’s most-significant moves as coach was to rely on a pace-heavy attack, with allrounder Will Jacks deployed as the frontline spinner to balance the side.Surrey topped the South Group in the Vitality Blast, only to lose their home quarter-final against Yorkshire, but were less successful in the Royal London Cup – in part due to the demands on their playing staff through the Hundred and England commitments.Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, said: “After a full and proper process, Gareth was the outstanding candidate for the role of head coach of Surrey’s men’s side and has fully earned his opportunity. Alongside our backroom team, Gareth did an outstanding job last season, handling all the challenges that were thrown his way.”Batts is one of the most hard-working and forward thinking people in the game and his deep knowledge, commitment and dedication to the job that he brings every single day is a massive positive. His enthusiasm and his passion is infectious and this has been very well received by the group.”Batty was assisted by Azhar Mahmood and Jim Troughton during the 2022 summer, with both coaches expected to be retained on a permanent basis.
