Rabada's five-for, de Kock, Verreynne fifties help SA level series against Bangladesh

Bangladesh restricted to 194 as Afif’s 72 not enough

Mohammad Isam20-Mar-2022
Kagiso Rabada’s second five-wicket haul along with fifties from Quinton de Kock and Kyle Verreynne helped South Africa beat Bangladesh by seven wickets and level the three-match ODI series at 1-1.The home side reached the target of 195 in 37.2 overs, with de Kock top-scoring with 62 and Verreynne remaining unbeaten on 58.South Africa’s fast bowlers used the short ball to good effect as the visitors’ top order was blown away. Bangladesh were 34 for 5 in the 13th over and that they reached closer to 200 was down to Afif Hossain’s 72 off 107 balls. While chasing, de Kock set the platform when he went after Taskin Ahmed with a six over wide long-on, and then hit him for two fours. He then swept Mehidy Hasan Miraz for a four before lofting him over covers for his second six. South Africa got off to a good start, and Jannemann Malan, who had struck two fours early and began aggresively, played the second fiddle.de Kock then struck three fours in a row off Shoriful Islam, before hitting two more fours as brought up his 28th fifty off 26 balls. Soon after his fifty, the left-hander was dropped by Mushfiqur off Mehidy, when he was on 54.Mehidy, however, made up for the dropped chance by picking up the wicket of Malan in the 13th over, but by then the openers had added 86 runs. Malan was bowled for 26 when he missed a sweep. Shakib Al Hasan dismissed de Kock when Afif intercepted his slog sweep, and then hopped near the boundary rope to take the catch.South Africa captain Temba Bavuma and Verreynne didn’t allow Bangladesh to make further in-roads, as they shared an 82-run stand for the third wicket. Both struck the ball sweetly once settled, with Verreynne hitting Taskin for two sixes over square-leg, and Bavuma also targeting the same bowler. Taskin had an off-day as he was hit for four sixes, the most in a match in his ODI career.Bavuma got out with 19 runs needed for the win, as Verreynne and Rassie van der Dussen completed the formalities.Earlier, South Africa’s fast bowlers ripped through the Bangladesh top order, with Rabada inflicting three early blows and Lungi Ngidi getting Tamim Iqbal in the third over. Tamim’s forward prod met with the extra bounce and resulted in a simple catch for Keshav Maharaj running in from backward point.Shakib Al Hasan succumbed to Rabada’s hint of extra bounce, top-edging a catch to Verreynne at cover. The in-form Litton Das tried to get Bangladesh out of trouble, but he too was undone by Rabada’s short ball. Rabada cramped Litton for room, having the batter nicking off to de Kock.Rabada continued the bouncer barrage when he had Yasir Ali hopping to one in his sixth over, resulting in another easy catch for Maharaj. Left-arm quick Parnell got into the act when he snuck one through Mushfiqur Rahim’s bat and pad. Parnell’s first international wicket since 2017 left Bangladesh at 34 for 5 in the 13th over.Parnell, however, left the field in his next over, grabbing his left hamstring. Suddenly, South Africa were a bowler short, which meant Bavuma, who has never bowled before in an ODI, had to roll his arm over.Afif and Mahmudullah, however, couldn’t quite take advantage of the depleted attack. The stand of 60 runs ended when Mahmudullah gave Malan a catch at leg-slip in the 28th over.Mehidy and Afif were more fluent during their partnership. Afif struck his second ODI fifty, while Mehidy made 38 off 49 balls, including two slog-swept sixes off Maharaj. The duo added 86 runs for the seventh wicketAfif struck the ball really well through the covers, getting five of his nine fours through that region. He batted with discipline for most of the innings, particularly checking his shots on the leg side. Both Afif and Mehidy were dropped in the 41st over. Malan dropped Mehidy on 21 at long-on, while Bavuma dropped Afif off his own bowling. Afif was on 59 at that point.Rabada then got both Afif and Mehidy in his last over, both playing needless shots when they could have seen off Rabada and instead attacked the other bowlers.Rassie van der Dussen bowled the penultimate over and took Shoriful Islam’s wicket with his second ball in ODI cricket.

Perfect for McNeil: Everton could sign Doucoure upgrade once worth £72m

Everton have been throttled by adversity this season, but it’s important to remember that Sean Dyche’s lads have lost just one Premier League game in eight and have a two-point buffer between them and the relegation zone.

A more nuanced look at the situation would be sure to give rise to fear, but the Toffees support know that their side weathered some lashing storms last season to comfortably preserve their top-flight status.

Dyche’s position in the dugout might be… loose, and with The Friedkin Group set to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake, change could be afoot.

Supporters yearn for a more expansive style of football, but Everton would certainly need a new part in midfield to make that happen.

Everton transfer news

Recent reports have linked Juventus’ Arthur Melo with a move to Merseyside. The Brazilian midfielder has endured a torrid spell in Liverpool previously, but enjoyed a successful campaign on loan with Fiorentina last year.

Calciomercato revealed earlier this week that Arthur, out of the Old Lady project, is patiently waiting for the market to open in January, with plenty of Brasileiro Serie A interest. However, the player’s desire is to remain in Europe.

Arthur

Last week, Italian sources claimed that Goodison Park is best positioned to complete a swoop this winter, and given that it wouldn’t break the bank, could be a fantastic deal to help shift Everton’s playing style toward something more modern.

Why Arthur Melo could be perfect for Everton

Let’s get the glaring caveat out of the way. Arthur suffers from a bitter track record on the fitness front, with injuries and setbacks ruining his progress across several recent seasons.

Namely, the 28-year-old fell heavily from the wagon at Liverpool, joining on loan for the 2022/23 campaign but completing just 13 minutes of action, off the bench against Napoli in the Champions League. His past on the other side of the River Mersey is something that some Toffees fans will have an issue with, but if he can get going, he could bring a welcome dimension to Everton’s first team.

Once of Barcelona, Arthur honed his passing game within one of the best teams to ever do it before transferring to Juventus for a £72.5m fee in 2020. The talent is still there, even if he hasn’t had the best time since making that Italy-bound move.

As per FBref, the £102k-per-week ace ranked among the top 1% of central midfielders in Serie A last season for pass completion, the top 6% for passes attempted and the top 15% for progressive passes per 90, denoting a metronomic composure and ball-playing sharpness that would bring something to Dyche’s system that perhaps it doesn’t presently contain.

Passing is just one aspect of Arthur’s game, however, for he demonstrated his athleticism and creditable defensive output with La Viola on loan last season. It’s perhaps promising that he succeeded in playing the lion’s share of the 2023/24 term without falling to injury, and is only absent from the field right now due to tactical decisions made by Juventus manager Thiago Motta.

At the end of the previous campaign, the Brazil international said that he felt “phenomenal,” in possibly the best shape of his professional career.

Everton need more inspiration and purchase in the middle of the park, and Arthur would help this cause and then some, if he stays fit. He could take the place of Abdoulaye Doucoure, for example.

With Dwight McNeil operating in attacking midfield, Doucoure has sat deeper for much of the campaign. Approaching his 32nd birthday and out of contract next summer, the hulking Malian is still a good option for the Blues but lacks Arthur’s ball-centred strengths and his combative crispness too, completing 85% of his Premier League passes this year and winning only 46% of his ground duels.

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure

Implementing a conduit to channel sweeping passing sequences could bear dividends for Everton and it could be perfect for newly-fashioned number ten McNeil, who has excelled in the role for Everton this term.

Principally played on the left wing throughout his career, the 25-year-old has been refashioned this term to promote creativity and spark from central positions. As The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland puts it: “Everton are now crossing less & playing more through balls.” McNeil is a focal architect in this regard.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

It’s working a treat, for McNeil’s productivity at the least. The former Burnley prospect has posted three goals and three assists from nine appearances while central this year, averaging 2.7 key passes per game, as per Sofascore, to highlight his dynamism.

He hasn’t been crowbarred into the position, though it’s clear that allowing the electric Iliman Ndiaye to thrive out on the left flank was part of Dyche’s reasoning, but McNeil’s role at the front of the midfield triangle has perhaps knocked the fluency somewhat, with more needed in the defensive department.

Were Arthur to be added to the equation, the Englishman could take his game to the next level. He’s shown that he has the attacking properties to be a real star, and with a controlled and progressive presence behind him, could prove to be a real menace for Everton.

There’s also the elephant in the room to consider: Dyche is walking on thin ice and with a gruelling run of fixtures forthcoming in the Premier League, could be dismissed before the calendar year’s end. TEAMtalk have compiled a list of candidates that TFG are believed to be weighing up.

Football manager Sergio Conceicao

Everton could be set for a tough winter, more’s the pity, but there are some exciting possibilities that could see a squad carrying dormant talent take it and direct it toward the sun.

Arthur in the centre, pulling the strings; McNeil up ahead, making things happen. It’s enough to make a curmudgeon feel some slice of optimism.

Of course, the pendulum could swing the other way, into the cold familiarity of disappointment, but who knows, new era, new ideas new parts – things might just change for the better.

Everton need to sell a star who Richarlison thought was "like Ronaldo"

Regardless of Sean Dyche’s fate, this Everton star needs to be sold in January.

Who is Sai Sudharsan, and what's his back-story?

The lowdown on the 20-year-old Tamil Nadu batter who has debuted for Gujarat Titans at the IPL

Deivarayan Muthu08-Apr-2022Who is Sai Sudharsan?
He was the breakout star of Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2021, where he was the second-highest run-getter with 358 runs in eight innings at an average of 71.60 and strike rate of 143.77, in Lyca Kovai Kings’ run to the Eliminator. Sai Sudharsan was previously part of Chepauk Super Gillies at the TNPL, but didn’t make his debut until last year. After impressing in TNPL 2021 with his strokeplay, Sai Sudharsan was fast-tracked into Tamil Nadu’s white-ball and Ranji Trophy sides.Okay, tell me about his background…
Sai Sudharsan comes from a fairly strong sporting background. His father Bharadwaj is an athlete who represented India at the South Asian (SAF) Games, while his mother Usha Bharadwaj represented Tamil Nadu in volleyball.Sai Sudharsan brings with him the reputation of being a heavy-scorer in age-group cricket and league cricket in Chennai. He subsequently climbed through the ranks to open the batting for India A alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Under-19 Challenger Trophy in 2019-20. The likes of Tilak Varma, Ravi Bishnoi and Priyam Garg were all part of that tournament.More on his TNPL stint…
Sai Sudharsan kicked off the season with 87 off 43 balls against a Salem Spartans attack led by G Periyaswamy, T Natarajan’s protégé from Chinnappampatti, and M Ashwin, Tamil Nadu’s premier legspinner. Sai Sudharsan was fluent either side of the wicket on debut, with his high-elbowed drives and slog-sweeps having shades of his state senior Washington Sundar.Over the course of the season, Sai Sudharsan showed that he could construct an innings as well as hit out in the middle overs and at the death, something that attracted the attention of the Tamil Nadu selectors.

How did he fare at the Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare tournaments?
In a powerful Tamil Nadu white-ball side that had M Shahrukh Khan, Vijay Shankar, Dinesh Karthik, B Aparajith and N Jagadeesan, Sai Sudharsan was largely a failsafe at No. 3. He bedded into domestic cricket with 35 off 19 balls against Maharashtra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and then hit higher notes against Kerala with a 31-ball 46. He took on legspinner Sudhesan Midhun and offspinner Jalaj Saxena, with the pick of his seven fours being a precise back-foot late-cut off Saxena. During the Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophies, Sai Sudharsan also rolled out some eye-catching scoops and sweeps. Can he bowl?
Yes, he can bowl legspin, though sparingly. Sai Sudharsan pitched in with an over of legspin – and took a wicket – against Bengal in the 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy when M Ashwin was unavailable.During the domestic white-ball season, Sai Sudharsan’s part-time legspin was often used at the nets to help Shahrukh tune up against the slower bowlers, Tamil Nadu’s assistant coach R Prasanna had said. Now, on his IPL debut, Sai Sudharsan will be going up against his TNPL captain Shahrukh, who is playing for Punjab Kings. How much he did he earn at the IPL 2022 auction?
He was picked up by Titans at his base price of INR 20 lakh (USD 26,000 approx.)

While Clearlake Capital have displayed a history of serious spending since the consortium’s takeover in 2022, Todd Boehly and BlueCo will be wary of throwing illustrious new names into the mix mid-season when the current team appears to possess such a well-executed balance right now.

That being said, reliable Blues journalist Simon Phillips reported earlier this week that Chelsea are prioritising the addition of a new centre-back, and this could happen as early as January.

The futures of Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile, who have struggled for consistent minutes in their first-team overall, despite minutes in cup competitions, are described as uncertain by Phillips, even if other reliable sources indicate that Chelsea actually see a bright future for the latter player (Ben Jacobs).

Of the centre-backs being targeted, one of them is Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite. It is believed Branthwaite has interest from Chelsea heading into 2025, but he isn’t the only defender on their radar, with Benfica’s Tomas Araujo, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and Portugal international Antonio Silva all being considered (Simon Phillips).

However, perhaps the most interesting target, and one who would be an undoubted statement addition, is Man City star Ruben Dias.

Chelsea considering "massive" deal for Man City star Ruben Dias

According to Phillips’ “best and most historic Chelsea source”, via the reporter’s Substack, Chelsea are considering Dias as a potential centre-back signing – with the £180,000-per-week treble winner on their shortlist.

The source has urged readers to “keep an eye” on Dias’ possible switch to Stamford Bridge, in what would be a “massive deal”, and a type of transfer which the club’s hierarchy are apparently striving for.

Ruben Dias

Up until recently, Dias has been an ever-present in City’s defence and key player in their dominance of English football since signing for them from Benfica for around £65 million.

He is a player of proven Premier League and European pedigree, not to mention a real leader of men.

The 27-year-old is just five appearances away from 200 overall in a City shirt, during a period where he’s won trophies galore and clinched both the country and club’s 2021 Player of the Year award.

20 y/o Sunderland talent who’s "great to work with" could leave in January

A Sunderland player who has been hailed for being “great to work with” could now leave the club during the January transfer window.

Sunderland transfer news

The Black Cats will have the chance to sign new players when next month arrives, with Regis Le Bris no doubt keen on bringing in reinforcements during the second half of the season, as they look to seal promotion from the Championship.

One update has suggested that a mini squad overhaul could take place in January, with the likes of Wigan Athletic’s Sam Tickle and Peterborough United’s Kwame Poku linked with moves to Stadium of Light in recent times. Money is thought to be there to spend if they can clear a few spaces on the wage bill, which will be music to the ears of Sunderland supporters.

On the flip side, reports continue to link Jobe Bellingham with a move away from the Black Cats in the near future, with Borussia Dortmund believed to be in contact with him over a move there, in a transfer that would see him copy his older brother, Jude. Now, another Sunderland exit claim has emerged, with the club’s stance on his future seemingly made clear.

Sunderland youngster could now leave in January

According to a fresh update from the reliable James Copley for The Sunderland Echo, Jewison Bennette is now “likely” to leave Sunderland on loan in the January window. While the report suggests that an injury blow to Tom Watson could give the 20-year-old a “way back into the fold”, an exit still appears to be on the cards.

In truth, allowing Bennette to move on in January makes plenty of sense for all parties, considering he is threatening to grow stagnant at Sunderland this season. The young winger hasn’t yet featured in a single matchday squad for the Black Cats in 2024/25 to date, with his only appearance of the campaign a nine-minute cameo away to Preston North End in the EFL Cup back in August.

Bennette is a talented young player who needs minutes in order to develop as a player, with Graeme Murty praising him back in October, despite the frustration of having two goals disallowed for the Under-21s.

“He’s great to work with. He’s never complaining. He’s always open to listen. He’s really disappointed that both goals were ruled off, because they could have been the critical moments in the game. We came out on the wrong side of them, but he had to keep going and he had to then restart himself, and actually get himself back into the game… Hats off to him because it’s not easy, but he can be really, really happy with his day’s work.”

Sunderland have hit gold on "diamond" who may be sold for more than Clarke

Sunderland could soon cash in on this star for a high amount.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 13, 2024

There is still a slim chance that Sunderland could do a U-turn with Bennette and retain him for the rest of the season, not least because of Watson’s possible two-month injury, but that should only happen if Regis Le Bris sees genuine minutes for him.

Will Young 96 shores up Northants in draw with footsore Yorkshire

Haris Rauf and Matthew Revis share five wickets but visitors lack for penetration

David Hopps24-Apr-2022″Yorkshire set for victory against Northamptonshire” had been one morning headline, but as the Tykes contingent came down to breakfast, they would not have been that confident. Their third-day declaration had indicated their fear that it was going to be a hard slog and there was no certainty that they had the pace attack to flourish. Any such pessimism proved justifiable as Northants refused to yield on a placid surface. There were many shakes of head from the county’s travelling savants when Yorkshire failed to declare at tea on the third day when the lead was 452. Northants had never managed more than 411 in the fourth innings in their history. No side had ever chased more than 472 in the fourth innings of the Championship – Middlesex to beat Yorkshire eight years ago. In defiance of such statistics, Yorkshire opted to top-load for four more overs until they led by 498, smacking of a side not confident in its bowling resources. In their defence, the docility of the fourth-day pitch did suggest that offering a more chaseable target would have been strewn with pitfalls.Allowing yourself 120 overs to bowl out the opposition does seem ample, a view expressed afterwards by Yorkshire’s coach, Ottis Gibson. Eight points for a draw also makes any declaration a 50-50 gamble – eight points risked for eight points gained – a far less attractive proposition than it once was. Yorkshire, furthermore, still have the threat of points deductions hanging over their head as the Azeem Rafiq racism enquiry limps on. Are they chasing the title or avoiding the drop? Shouldn’t they be told? And everyone has to rock up and do this all again on Thursday as the counties try to negotiate what essentially on these deliberately-demanding, educational pitches are the equivalent of seven back-to-back Test matches. It is only a few years since two successive Test matches for England were regarded as an onerous undertaking. Already, around the counties, there are almost as many absent pace bowlers as there are those available.Northants’ resistance was organised by Will Young, the New Zealand opener, who was only four runs short of an unperturbed hundred when Matthew Revis managed to bring one back off the seam – a rare sight – and Young played on from a limp bottom edge. Young had batted for six hours and more than eight hours in the match. Resilient contributions from Rob Keogh and Lewis McManus, on loan from Hampshire, also help Northants towards a draw that will strengthen their conviction that they can survive in Division One.Related

Had Young’s edge against Haris Rauf, on 3, been held the previous evening by the wicketkeeper Harry Duke, the story might have been different. Duke flung himself to his right in the fourth over of the innings and failed to hold a tough, dipping catch. It was not his first blemish while keeping to Rauf this season as he comes to terms with his extra pace.Young’s Test career had a blip with three single-figure scores against South Africa in two Christchurch Tests in February, but he enjoyed a brief stint with Durham last season and he ticked along in risk-free fashion, leg-side singles to the fore, until he was sixth out with 26 overs remaining. Yorkshire managed only one more success as Northants went on to establish their highest fourth-innings score against Yorkshire. In the injury absence through injury of Matty Fisher and Ben Coad, and with David Willey’s impact being made at Royal Challengers Bangalore, the pedigree was lacking. Rauf has the firepower to unsettle batters on the most docile of surfaces, but his first-class experience is scant and at times his self-admonishment at not quite getting it right was clear to see. His last act, appropriately enough, was to kick at the ball in frustration. As for Fisher, he is out for a month with a “stress reaction” in his back (a possible precursor to a stress fracture) and will regain fitness, conveniently, just in time to be considered for the international summer. The rest of Yorkshire’s pace attack was a bit of a patched-up affair. The seasoned skipper, Steve Patterson, was supported by Jordan Thompson, who failed to repeat his threat in the first innings and two batters-turned-allrounders, Matthew Revis and George Hill.Revis had an excellent game – three wickets in each innings, and proof of his all-round usefulness that might well have kick-started his county career. But it was illustrative that most threat was carried by a player whose first-class record amounted to 2 for 19 against Nottinghamshire last September, and who hadn’t really thought of himself as a bowler until the former Yorkshire bowling coach, Richard Pyrah, proposed it two winters ago. He cranked it up to 81mph more than once and that was beyond all but Rauf, with Thompson markedly down on pace.Three morning wickets and Yorkshire’s victory would seem feasible. They duly delivered that number with Rauf roughing up Northants’ top order to good effect. Ricardo Vasconcelos, who has yet to find batting form as captain, fended a chest-high ball to gully. The short ball that removed Emilio Gay in Rauf’s next over was more waspish – a straight, head-high delivery which Gay, a tall, stately figure, played well enough, apart from the fact he plopped it into the hands of Dom Bess at short leg. Revis had his first wicket of the day when he seamed one across Saif Zaib for Duke to hold the catch.Young found redoubtable support from Rob Keogh in a fifth-wicket stand of 99 in 39 overs during which Yorkshire experimented with Dawid Malan’s legspin; no turn there either. Hill had Keogh caught at short extra off a leading edge with the first ball he bowled and it may be a long time before he bowls to such attacking fields again.Bess’ offspin is a key component, a player with England ambitions. But he carried little threat, his one moment of delight coming when he did straighten one to have the left-hander, Luke Procter, lbw. When he first burst on to the scene as Jack Leach’s partner in crime at Somerset, he had a shorter, fuss-free run. Now he has a longer, but halting run, coming to a stop halfway through his approach to make the first part appear superfluous.Yorkshire found no joy with the second new ball. Rauf resorted to yorkers and bouncers but was repelled. Instead, it was Revis who struck twice more, first Young then the Australian Matthew Kelly, yorked. Kelly had almost run himself out attempting a madcap single, but Thompson’s throw was off target. It would have taken something random for Yorkshire to win this. Instead, the sides shook hands on a stalemate and, bodies aching, they must do this all again on Thursday.

Real Madrid player ratings vs Atletico Madrid: Blancos get Vinicius Jr out of jail after penalty pain as holders edge into Champions League quarterfinals after controversial shootout

The Brazilian missed from 12 yards in normal time but Carlo Ancelotti's side prevailed on spot kicks, will meet Arsenal

Antonio Rudiger buried the winning penalty kick in a chaotic shootout to send Real Madrid to the Champions League quarter-finals after Atletico Madrid levelled the last-16 tie with a 1-0 second-leg win on Wednesday.

Atleti scored early, but the game descended into a cagey stalemate thereafter, and penalties were the cruel difference maker. Both sides missed from the spot, but Rudiger's winner sent Madrid through.

Atleti only needed 27 seconds to level the tie as they capitalised on a languid opening from Madrid, working the ball down the right in a well-constructed move that ended with a Conor Gallagher tap-in. Los Blancos, by contrast, scarcely had a chance in the first half as Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo were well-neutralised by Atleti out wide, while Kylian Mbappe constantly wandered into traffic.

The home side, meanwhile, looked dangerous every time they broke, full of zip and intent. Julian Alvarez found all sorts of dangerous positions, but was repeatedly denied by Thibaut Courtois. Still, for all of their desire, there was an inevitability about the scoreline at the break.

Real looked a much changed side in the second half, and seemed to have a golden chance to break the tie open when Mbappe was dragged down in the box by Clement Lenglet. Vinicius, however, skied the ensuing penalty. After that, there were a series of half-chances before extra-time, which failed to provide any clear cut opportunities.

Eventually, penalties were needed to settle things, and Atleti blinked first as Alvarez slipped while taking his spot-kick, which led to him touching the ball twice. The Rojiblancos did have a chance to get back into it after Lucaz Vazquez's effort was saved, only to see Marcos Llorente blast the ball off the bar.

Real, of course, capitalised, as Rudiger's penalty crept in off the palm of Jan Oblak, sending them – impossibly, yet inevitably – to another Champions League quarter final.

Partially culpable for Madrid's struggles early on, yet settled into the game with aplomb. Hero in the end for burying the winner.

Ferland Mendy (4/10):

Far too easily exploited down his side as Madrid opened the scoring. Really sloppy on the ball, and made some errors. Ended his night with an apparent hamstring injury.

Aurelien Tchouameni (6/10):

Fell asleep on the Atleti opener. Passed efficiently without offering much in the way of quality. Much improved in the second half before being subbed.

Jude Bellingham (7/10):

Rather toothless early on as he barely had a kick in the first half. Got involved a bit more in the second, and benefitted when the game opened up a bit. Blasted his pen home.

Luka Modric (6/10):

Not his most convincing night on the ball, but seemed to relish the midfield scrap. Only lasted 65 minutes.

Rodrygo (6/10):

Quiet in the first half – but far busier in the second. Unlucky to be subbed.

Kylian Mbappe (7/10):

Won the penalty that Vinicius missed. Scarcely involved in the first half, but far more active as the game opened up. Buried his spot-kick in the shootout.

Vinicius Jr (4/10):

Was swarmed every time he touched the ball. Blasted a penalty over in the second half. Made a few poor decisions thereafter. His worst showing in a while.

An improvement over the disappointing Mendy, and offered a real attacking thrust.

Endrick (N/A):

Late legs for a tired Vinicius.

Carlo Ancelotti (8/10):

Went with his strongest possible side, including the call to play Valverde at right-back. Can't really be blamed for his side's early sloppiness – or for Vinicius missing a penalty. The Madrid Champions League plot armour continues…

Although MLS players earn substantial wages, their salaries appear modest compared to the world's top earners, with nobody from MLS making the top-five list.

At the top is the ageless Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. In second place is Al Ittihad's Karim Benzema, while Riyad Mahrez of Al Ahli secures the third spot.

Meanwhile, Senegalese internationals Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly round off the list at third and fourth position, respectively.

Aston Villa agree £6m+ deal to sign "quick" gem who will arrive next week

Aston Villa have already agreed their first signing of the January transfer window, with the teenager expected to arrive next week to undergo a medical and finalise the deal, according to a fresh report.

Aston Villa set for busy January window

Though the January transfer window is yet to open, Aston Villa and Unai Emery have already lined up plenty of business.

The Premier League side have already announced plans to recall Louie Barry from Stockport, where he was leading the League One goalscoring charts. It is expected that the young forward will head out on loan once more, though at a higher level amid interest from across the Championship in his services.

Currently sixth in the Premier League, Villa are keen to bolster their ranks in a bid to compete across both England’s top flight and the Champions League, with the club well-placed to progress to the next round of Europe’s elite competition.

To that end, they have reportedly shown an interest in signing yet more firepower, with Greek striker Stefanos Tzimas among those that Emery’s side are keeping a close eye on.

Now though, they appear to have reached an agreement at the other end of the pitch.

Aston Villa agree deal to sign talent

That is according to a fresh report out of Turkey, which claims that the Villans have agreed a deal worth €8m (£6.6m) to sign teenage centre-back Yasin Ozcan from Super Lig side Kasimpasa.

As per the report, Ozcan “will travel to England in the first week of January to undergo medical checks” after the two clubs “reached an agreement” for the defender.

Ozcan has started all 16 games for Kasimpasa this season, and is considered an elite future talent, with Talent Scout Jacek Kulig describing him as a “highly talented LCB” and “the future of Turkish football”, before adding elsewhere that Ozcan was a “quick, tenacious CB with superb timing and sharp reactions”.

Though his £5,200 a week deal in Turkey runs until 2029, it appears that Villa have moved swiftly to tie up a deal amid major interest from clubs across Europe, and could well have the deal completed in the first week of the New Year.

It remains unclear whether they intend to use Ozcan immediately, or whether or not Emery’s side will look to loan him out in order for him to gain additional first team experience.

Ozcan has already made 76 senior appearances to date, but with both Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres already at Emery’s disposal to cover at left centre-back. Though he can also play at left-back, Villa are also well covered in that role, meaning a loan move for the remainder of the campaign may be sensible to ensure that his progress is not stunted by a spell on the sidelines at Villa Park.

Villa have been targeting talent from the Turkish top flight for some time, with the club also tipped to make an offer for Besiktas talent Semih Kilicsoy in the January window. For now though, they appear set to welcome Ozcan to Villa Park in the days to come.
