Sheffield United: Fans can’t believe Jack O’Connell didn’t receive England call-up

Sheffield United fans have been left stunned that centre-back Jack O’Connell was once again overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate.

The 25-year-old was not selected in the latest Three Lions squad as they prepare to take on Bulgaria and the Czech Republic in UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Blades supporters feel that the defender has been hard done by, given his outstanding performances for the club in recent years.

Indeed, he was a regular as they gained promotion from the Championship last season, starting 41 of their 46 league fixtures and chipping in with three goals and four assists (via Transfermarkt).

He has also been an two clean sheets.

However, alongside regulars Harry Maguire and Joe Gomez it was Tyrone Mings, Michael Keane and Fikayo Tomori who got the nod from Southgate.

The inclusions of the latter three on that list ahead of O’Connell have baffled Blades fans. They argue that their player outperformed Mings in the Championship last season, and that he has also helped Sheffield United to a more solid start in the Premier League this season than Keane has at Everton.

As for Tomori, they say that he has only been selected because he is playing for a top-six club in Chelsea.

Here are what some Sheffield United fans have had to say following the news that O’Connell had not made the England squad…

Real Madrid fans react to Toni Kroos’ injury

It seems that Real Madrid can’t escape injuries this season.

Just the other night, when Los Blancos faced Granada over the weekend and won 4-2, Toni Kroos had to be subbed off as the newest in line with an injury concern.

And normally, that wouldn’t be such a surprise. After all, players get injured all the time and this is nothing particularly new.

But for Zinedine Zidane’s men, it’s becoming a worrying habit this campaign.

Since the beginning of pre-season, the Frenchman has lost 13 players to various different fitness setbacks and it’s safe to say that it has already caused him a headache or two.

Their fans are also seemingly less and less bothered. Of course, they are not happy with another injury but it seems that many of them have already gone numb when it comes to new medical reports on the club’s official Twitter account.

One fan even thinks that Real are cursed and that’s the reason they’re suffering so many setbacks this season and there are also many who are simply annoyed at suffering another issue.

West Ham fans react to the news of Robert Snodgrass’ retirement

Robert Snodgrass has announced his retirement from international football and it has provoked a mixed response from Hammers fans.

The 32-year-old had an injury-affected international career which limited him to just 28 appearances for his country, despite making his debut in 2011.

He has said the time is right for him to make way for younger talent, but that has led one West Ham fan to suggest he know longer wants to play football, and that he is happy to sit on the bench at the London Stadium.

Not everyone has been so harsh, however, with some using the opportunity to show appreciation for the winger, who can now focus all his attention on trying to get back into Manuel Pellegrini’s team.

Snodgrass has started just three times so far this campaign and will need to improve a lot on his last showing, achieving a SofaScore rating of 6.4 for his Scotland display in their 4-0 defeat to Russia.

Here is how some supporters have reacted to the news of his retirement.

Liverpool’s Adrian tweets about the time he scored a penalty against Everton

Adrian is currently going through arguably the best spell of his career. The Spanish goalkeeper has been Liverpool’s number one for the past couple of months due to an injury to Alisson, and has won all eight league fixtures he has played in and helped crown the Reds as Super Cup champions.Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, the stopper arrived in Liverpool as a bit of a hero already, due to an iconic moment he had against Everton a few years back while playing for West Ham.

The Hammers tweeted the video of Adrian’s penalty goal against the Toffees on Thursday as a throwback post, and the stopper clearly has fond memories of that moment.

As If Liverpool fans couldn’t love the Spaniard any more after his heroics this season, they can now gloat about the time he mugged off Everton by throwing his gloves off before taking the spot-kick.

The replies to the Spaniard’s tweet shows that the Anfield faithful are already relishing in this moment and we’re sure that this will be brought up ahead of the next Merseyside derby.

Man Utd fans slam decision to name Harry Maguire as captain against Partizan

Talk about a quick rise to the top. Harry Maguire may have only joined Manchester United earlier in the summer, but he appears to have made an immediate impression on those at Old Trafford.

The England international arrived in a £80m deal from fellow Premier League side Leicester, and was hailed for his leadership qualities by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Following Antonio Valencia’s departure in the transfer window, the United boss revealed Ashley Young had taken over captaincy duties, with David de Gea filling in whenever the veteran isn’t in the team.

But with the duo not in the side to face Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night in the Europa League, Solskjaer opted to go for Maguire as the man to wear the armband.

After seeing the decision, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the captaincy situation.

Many supporters of the Manchester side couldn’t believe their eyes, and insisted Maguire being named captain so soon into his time at the club really spoke volumes of how far they have fallen.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino praised by Gary Neville despite Man United performance

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville heaped praise onto Liverpool’s Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino despite having a quiet game during the Reds’ 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

What’s the word?

Firmino, 28, has proved to be a critical link between himself, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah over the past two seasons at Anfield.

However, the Brazilian forward had a poor afternoon on Sunday as his creativity in and around the forwards was unable to guide his side to victory against their hated neighbours.

Watch a Liverpool fan discover the internet and get a nasty surprise in the video below…

Nevertheless, former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville told Sky Sports, via The Liverpool Echo, that he admires Firmino. He said: “Liverpool play with three mobile strikers. Firmino doesn’t score 25 goals every year. He does an unbelievable job, I love him to bits, but he doesn’t score 25 goals.

“We had strikers at Manchester United who didn’t score 25, 30 goals but they did brilliant jobs. You can still win without a striker that scores 25, 30 goals.”

Unique player

Firmino is a unique player in his own way and would only fit into certain playing styles, particularly within Liverpool’s 4-3-3 formation.

After the crucial role he played during the Reds’ 3-1 win over Newcastle in September, his teammate Andrew Robertson described him as “frightening” as his introduction from the bench changed the outcome of the game. His lay-off to Salah during the victory illustrates he is the unselfish, deep-lying forward that creates the connections from the midfield to the attackers.

The Reds have proved that it is possible to play in the Premier League without an old fashioned No. 9. Both Salah and Mane picked up the Premier League Golden Boot last season after scoring 22 goals apiece, sharing the gong with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Having someone who drops deep to the tip of the midfield and plays in the ball to wing and in the channels has been the key to Liverpool’s success. Neville recognises this and appreciates what the 28-year-old can bring to a team.

Firmino’s importance can’t be proved by the use of statistics. The only way to enjoy the Brazilian is simply just to watch him.

Arsenal duo could lead a mass exodus at the Emirates Stadium

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Telegraph, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not sign new contracts with Arsenal if they do not qualify for the Champions League this year.

What’s the story?

The Gunners are currently four points off fourth place, which is currently held by Chelsea.

The Emirates Stadium outfit have won just two of their last eight Premier League games as the pressure cranks up on manager Unai Emery.

Arsenal fans have started to turn on Unai Emery, find out who they’d rather have in charge in the video below…

Now, there is more cause for concern. If they do not manage to finish in those top four positions, The Telegraph is saying they will struggle to hold on to their star duo.

A total rebuild

Right now, Lacazette and Aubameyang are arguably their team’s two best players.

Both are currently valued at £63m by Transfermarkt, taking their combined value to £126m and have scored 87 goals in 171 games between them since they arrived – regularly playing a key role when on the pitch.

However, perhaps this is the perfect time for both of them to leave north London. There appear to be big issues at the club at the moment, and it seems that things have gone stale.

Rotten to the core may be slightly too strong, but it is going in that direction.

Arsenal need a big change, and quickly. Other than Nicolas Pepe, who has just arrived from Lille, no-one has as high market value as those two top forwards. Between them, they would likely command significant fees which would allow considerable investment into the playing squad.

They should lead a mass exodus that would allow for a totally fresh start at the club.

Others, like Mesut Ozil, appear to have little future either, especially given a supposed agreement between the Emery and the board over the German.

Meanwhile, the manager is said to have lost parts of the dressing room which surely makes his position untenable. Granit Xhaka’s future may also be in doubt after he was booed his own fans last weekend.

Moving a lot of these players on would add to a huge transfer kitty next summer, and would allow a potential new boss with different ideas to mould the squad the way he would like.

There are already some players who are untouched by the vitriol, such as Gabriel Martinelli, Matteo Guendouzi and Kieran Tierney. They can lead the team into the future, but they need a fresh impetus alongside them to get the ball rolling.

Yes, Lacazette and Aubameyang are top players, but their exits would make a statement and would provide the funds needed to revamp a failing squad.

It could just re-energise a team wilting away.

Arsenal: Danny Mills urges Gunners to build team around Mesut Ozil

Former Premier League footballer Danny Mills has urged Arsenal to keep playing Mesut Ozil – stating that the team must be set up around him to get the best out of the German World Cup winner.

Ozil made a long-awaited return to a Premier League squad for the Gunners on Saturday, following a seemingly unforced absence that has seen him left out of Unai Emery’s plans since September before making a comeback in Arsenal’s 5-5 draw with Liverpool in the EFL Cup last week.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills felt that while the 31-year-old divides opinion, playing him in the right role gives Arsenal an outlet with ‘devastating ability’.

He said: “Ozil will always split opinion, he is a magnificent player. So much ability, but his languid style doesn’t always look like he’s putting a shift in. His ability on the ball is amazing, it’s fabulous.

“You have to play him in the right role, you have to play him in the number 10 role or give him license to let him do what he wants to do.

“If you can get that player fit and playing well, you’ve got a World Cup winner who’s got devastating ability at times, but you’ve got to set the team up to get the best out of him.”

Ozil made an instant impact upon his return to the first-team fold, registering an assist in the 10-goal thriller at Anfield last Wednesday.

He was to be frustrated at the weekend, however, as Wolves held a Gunners side whose selection had been widely panned by the Arsenal support, with the likes of Nicolas Pepe left out despite Ozil’s reintroduction to the starting XI.

Should Ozil retain his starting position, it could give Mills a chance to justify his comments, but given the German’s quiet start to the current campaign, the jury may still be out on his present qualities, with the midfielder notching just two assists in the Premier League last season.

Given his previous best is 19, it is understandable should Mills believe Ozil is a source of quality for Arsenal, though considering he was only recently reinstalled to the Gunners lineup, his future may still hang in the balance.

Nottingham Forest hope Aro Muric is recalled by Manchester City

This may not be the best way to treat someone, particularly as it’s his birthday.

But that’s the treatment that Aro Muric has been getting from Nottingham Forest fans in the wake of some events that occurred on Wednesday night at his parent club.

After Claudio Bravo was sent off for Manchester City in their Champions League game with Atalanta, the Citizens could be staring at a goalkeeper crisis after Kyle Walker had to deputise.

Their first-choice keeper Ederson, meanwhile, sustained an injury in the same game.

As a result, there were a lot of Nottingham Forest fans who were flat out demanding that Pep Guardiola take him back to the Etihad, responding following the game and after the club posted that it was his birthday.

Muric started off the season as the club’s number one, but has found himself on the bench since the end of August and replaced with Brice Samba in goal. Since then, he’s only made one appearance during the Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal.

If these Forest fans had their way, that may be the last time they see him between the sticks for the club.

He might get more game time if they brought him back, so perhaps it’s in Muric’s best interests as well.

Liverpool fans loved Pep Guardiola’s touchline outburst after failed penalty appeal

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to express their love for one particular moment from their 3-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

The Merseysiders put in a top-drawer performance against the back-to-back Premier League champions to take a 2-0 lead into the half-time break, and their win means that they remain unbeaten after 12 league matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are now eight points clear of second-place Leicester, but loads of Liverpool supporters on Twitter seem to have enjoyed one moment in particular – Pep Guardiola’s second-half outburst on the touchline.

The Spaniard could be seen holding two fingers up and yelling ‘twice’ following an incident in which the ball was played off Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hand by Raheem Sterling.

Incidentally, the ball also hit Alexander-Arnold’s hand in the first-half just seconds before Fabinho’s long-range strike, so it was those two moments in which Guardiola expressed his frustration over.

The manner in which he did so, however, was quite amusing, and the Liverpool fans on Twitter certainly seemed to find it funny…
