ODI DEBUT: Still awaitedBIOGRAPHY (updated April 2002)Barney Rogers comes from a cricket-loving family, his father having played first-team cricket at school and his uncle Brian for the national schools team in 1974 and 1975. Naturally his first contact with the game was at home, in the family garden, at the age of about three or four. Like Alistair Campbell, he is a natural right-hander, but his father changed him round on the theory that the strongest hand should be at the top of the bat. His father batted left-handed and bowled right, and his uncle just the opposite, so the ability to be ambidextrous seems to run in the family. He attended Bryden Country School for his primary years, and was first selected for the school colts team at the end of his Grade Three year. This was followed by two more full years at colts level and two years in the school first team, both as captain. He was in a strong side, with Sean Ervine and Glen Goosen in the same team, and the school’s practice was to retire them soon after reaching their fifties to give others a turn, so he was unable to build any really big scores. His best, as far as he remembers, was 87 not out against a South African touring team, for a combined team of Bryden and Lilfordia School players. As a bowler, he was a leg-spinner until Grade Five or Six, but then switched to off-spin because there were no other bowlers of this type around.Barney’s promise was so obvious that he played for the Midlands primary schools team in the national cricket week for his last three years at junior school, and in the last two was also selected for the national primary schools team. His most influential coach at school was Mr Tony Brouse, but Barney gives most credit to his father, who used to give him practice every day.He progressed to St John’s College for high school, batting at number three in his age-group teams for three years before being promoted to the first team as opening batsman. In his final year he dropped down to number four, a position he prefers. His best innings, and the most memorable of his career to date, was a score of 136 against the school’s Old Boys team. He scored a century against Churchill, as well as several other eighties and nineties during his time there, and a couple of five-wicket hauls with the ball. He also played winter cricket for Chegutu, scoring centuries against Matabeleland and Kadoma, together with a couple of eighties and nineties. At representative level he played for the national Under-13 team that participated in the South African week; he failed to make the Under-16 team but was back for the Under-19 week and the development side to Kenya in August 2000, making big fifties but no centuries on both these tours. He has played club cricket for Old Georgians Sports Club during the last three seasons, his best score being a sixty against Manicaland. He left school at the end of 2000, having set his sights on a career in cricket, and was accepted for the CFX Academy in 2001.He batted with remarkable consistency in the Logan Cup, scoring four fifties and only once failing to reach 20 in the five matches. He was included in first-class warm-up matches to play the Indian and West Indian tourists, scoring 65 not out against the former. He feels that his year at the Academy may not have changed his technique very much but helped him to mature quickly and become more determined. After his year was over he successfully applied to stay in Mashonaland. At club level he continued to play for Old Georgians, but without any outstanding returns. He is playing for Irvine, in Scotland, in the 2002 season, his first venture overseas. As a batsman he can score fluently all round the wicket, and especially enjoys the cover drive, although he wouldn’t label it as his best stroke. With the ball he does not have much variety, but hopes to develop the ball that goes the other way. He enjoys fielding at point, but when captaining a team will generally take mid-on or mid-off so as to communicate better with his bowlers.Cricket heroes: Jacques Kallis, and Gary Kirsten’s ability to concentrate for long periods of time. "And Sachin Tendulkar, obviously."Toughest opponents: "It’s difficult to say because on different pitches bowlers can pose different threats. I’d say Harbhajan Singh was the most difficult of the international bowlers I’ve faced. The most difficult batsman was definitely Ganguly."Immediate ambitions: "I want to be in the national side for the World Cup. It’s quite high hopes, but that’s what I’m aiming for. I’d like to average about 40 in this Logan Cup, and with my bowling average two or three wickets an innings."Proudest achievement so far: "I enjoyed my 136 against Old Boys. All my hundreds were good."Best friends in cricket: "I’d like to say I’m friends with everyone, but can’t name any one best friend."Other qualifications: "I’ve done two coaching courses and have quite a high qualification in coaching cricket."Other sports: "First-team hockey and Zimbabwe hockey at Under-20 level. Tennis (Mashonaland Country Districts in Grade 7), rugby, squash and swimming. Nothing except cricket since I left school."Outside interests: "I enjoy spear-fishing."

Wolves keen on signing Joao Palhinha

Wolves won’t have a great deal of money to spend this summer. It’s an unfortunate eventuality but ultimately one which cost Nuno Santo his job in the Midlands.

It would appear that the only way to spend big this summer will be to sell some of their prized assets.

What’s the word?

One player who has been on the radar of the Old Gold for a while now is Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha. They’ve been interested in the 25-year-old since last year but, despite winning Liga NOS with Sporting this term, he could be heading for the exit door.

According to Record (via Sport Witness), Wolves are the strongest candidates for his signature but a concrete proposal is yet to be made.

A separate report stated that Everton are also chasing his signature, which means that his agent, a certain Jorge Mendes, could be key in luring him to Molineux instead.

Ideal Neves replacement

Palhinha may not possess the long-range shooting of Ruben Neves, but he’d be a stellar replacement for the 24-year-old in the middle of the park.

The Wolves midfielder looks likely to leave this summer, with the Old Gold needing to sell before they can spend this summer. The Athletic claimed that a fee of £35m will be enough to tempt the Molineux hierarchy into selling the Portugal international.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-guedes-toney-shaqiri-neves” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

If Neves does move on, it would be a huge blow. He has been the glue holding Wolves together for a number of years now, thriving in English football after becoming the most expensive signing in Championship history.

Wonderfully composed in possession of the ball, Palhinha is also a tough-tackling general in the middle of the park.

Those are two attributes synonymous with Neves. During this season, the 24-year-old completed 84.4% of his passes and registered 2.4 tackles per match.

Comparing those numbers to Palhinha, the Sporting stalwart was successful with just over 83% of his passes in Portugal, winning 3.3 tackles per game.

Neves is more productive in the final third but, if the club’s new manager requires someone who can win the ball back on a more regular basis, then Palhinha is their man.

Standing at 6 foot 3, the £35m midfielder’s game is well suited to the Premier League. His physical qualities are outstanding, bullying opponents to one side and then starting attacks.

The Portugal international’s 1.3 shots per game indicate he can also still get forward, which is important when considering how he can replace Neves.

A destructive force, Palhinha would come at a high cost. However, if they are going to lose one of their best players from the Nuno era, they will have to spend.

CPFC: Fans react to Arsenal’s Mitchell interest

Arsenal are thought to be keeping tabs on Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell, according to The Athletic.

And, as to be expected, the transfer links has had a number of Eagles fans talking on social media.

The Athletic ran a piece on Saturday, looking at the Gunners’ transfer plans for the summer.

It is thought a left-back to challenge Kieran Tierney is high up on their list, with Mitchell and Hibernian’s Josh Doig two names mentioned.

Arsenal have reportedly watched both players in action, however, Mitchell and Doig aren’t thought to be their first-choice target.

Mitchell is under contract at Selhurst Park until 2025 and ended the season as first-choice at left-back under Roy Hodgson, at the expense of Patrick van Aanholt. The 21-year-old is currently valued at £4.5m and has made 24 senior appearances for the club to date.

Palace fans react

@CPFCtransfersHQ shared the Gunners’ interest in Mitchell on Twitter on Saturday lunchtime.

This is what these Palace supporters had to say in reply, with one describing the full-back as ‘priceless’.

“£50m or go away”Credit: @RRcpfc”Tyrick is priceless in my mind. Not sure he has the potential to play for the top 6 but is most definitely a prem player so why sell? It’s a free left back for the next 10 years. Never like selling youngsters but this is what Cat 1 can do for us. They break into our first team, do well and get sold for tonnes to “bigger” clubs. Jurgen Klinsmann confirms Spurs Levy talk

Jurgen Klinsmann has revealed that he has spoken to Daniel Levy with regards to becoming the new Tottenham manager.

The Lowdown: Managerial search continues

Although it has now been seven weeks since Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties at Tottenham, Levy is yet to secure a deal for the 58-year-old’s replacement.

Antonio Conte appared to be in pole position to take the reins in north London, but a deal for the Italian fell through (The Guardian).

The Latest: Klinsmann confirms Levy talk

Klinsmann, who played for Tottenham during the 1990s, has now revealed that he had a telephone conversation with Levy with regards to taking over from Mourinho. He told ESPN:

“When Spurs let go Mourinho, I had a quick phone call with Daniel Levy and he said ‘let’s see down the road what happens’, he has to clarify a lot of things. Since then I’ve had no contact anymore with Spurs. Tottenham is Tottenham, you would always listen to that situation, and for me, obviously, Tottenham is a lot more.”

The Verdict: Don’t let sentiment get in the way

Klinsmann played for Tottenham for two years across two spells and did quite well – he managed 29 goals in 56 Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites (premierleague.com). However, his managerial record leaves a lot to be desired since he retired from playing.

The 56-year-old started out as the manager of Germany, and he did lead them to the 2006 World Cup semi-finals. However, he lasted less than a year at Bayern Munich before he was sacked, while short spells at Toronto FC and Hertha Berlin sandwiched his time with the USA national side (Transfermarkt).

While the Americans reached the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup, they failed to even participate at the next edition after a poor qualifying run for which Klinsmann was largely responsible.

Is this really the man Tottenham want to become their next manager?

In other news, Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign this Premier League star.

Liverpool linked to Ryan Gravenberch

Liverpool must revisit their interest in Ajax midfielder Ryan Gravenberch over the summer as they search for Gini Wijnaldum’s replacement.

What’s the story?

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (as reported by SportWitness), claimed Jurgen Klopp’s charges were among the 19-year-old’s list of suitors back in April, and the Reds would be foolish not to follow their admiration up with a concrete offer.

It’s not often a teenage talent attracts such widespread attention after only one full season in the senior set-up, but such is Gravenberch’s talent, Liverpool may have to move quickly to secure his services.

Liverpool must swoop

The youngster made 47 appearances for the Amsterdam giants last season, bagging five goals and providing six assists in all competitions as Erik ten Hag’s men completed the domestic double.

His outstanding displays have earned Gravenberch many plaudits throughout his short career, including former Netherlands international Wim Kieft.

“He is the greatest talent in the Netherlands. Only 18-years-old, but the prototype of a complete player. You see him grow every week,” Kieft said back in November.

“If someone like this makes his debut at the highest level, the big question is whether he can keep up with the faster pace. Gravenberch picks up on that very quickly.

“Also in the Champions League. When you see how, despite his height and physically, he easily turns away in the crowds and accelerates, you don’t see that much.”

The youngster has passed every test thrown at him so far and his 1.2 key passes per league game in 2020/21 – the joint-fifth highest in the Ajax squad, 68.4% pass accuracy and 1.6 dribbles per league game – both the second-highest amongst his teammates – illustrate the pivotal part he played in his side’s success.

While Gravenberch excels with the ball at his feet, he’s also blessed with enviable natural attributes.

Standing at 6 ft 3, the Dutch international would have no issue adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League and he could easily slot into the role left behind by his Dutch compatriot at Liverpool.

Wijnaldum was often charged with recycling possession, easing the pressure and keeping things simple in the Anfield outfit’s engine room, all things that Gravenberch excels at.

Therefore, the Reds must revisit their interest in the Ajax prodigy and make a swoop before one of Europe’s other big guns show their hand.

Gravenberch has everything it takes to become Wijanldum 2.0, Liverpool must act to make sure he becomes that at Anfield and not elsewhere.

And, in other news…Imagine him and Thiago: Edwards must sanction LFC swoop for “technically gifted” gem

Cidermen hope for Caddick return for big C and G match

Whilst the Somerset batsmen were out in the middle securing a draw from their match against Surrey Peter Anderson looked ahead to the vital games that his side are facing in the next few days

Richard Walsh07-Jul-2002Whilst the Somerset batsmen were out in the middle securing a draw from their match against Surrey Peter Anderson looked ahead to the vital games that his side are facing in the next few days.He told me: "Clearly a priority is to bolster our position in Division One of both the County Championship and the NUL National League, which has not been helped by the number of bowling injuries that we have attracted over the last few weeks."He continued: "We hope to have Andrew Caddick available for the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy match against Worcester on July 17th, and after Duncan Fletcher has told him that he needs to get a Somerset game under his belt there is also a chance that he might be available for the championship match against Sussex starting on July 19th, but how fit he will be we just don’t know."The chief continued: "We also hope to have Johnson back for the C and G game, but once again how fit he will be we don’t’ know. With Simon Francis breaking his finger and being out for a month, and Tucker and Trego both injured, once again we will be relying upon the old trooper Graham Rose."

Everton make contact with Antonio Conte

With Carlo Ancelotti no longer at the helm, Everton are unexpectedly searching for a new manager.

A number of coaches have been in the frame but the Toffees haven’t managed to conclude a deal just yet.

What’s the word?

Former Wolves boss Nuno Santo has been in talks with the club over the last two weeks and following a successful interview, he’d emerged as the favourite.

However, with discussions now stalling, Everton are beginning to turn their attentions elsewhere.

In a major update on the situation provided by Football Insider, it looks like they have now made contact with Antonio Conte about the position.

It’s not known at this point whether the Italian has any interest in succeeding Ancelotti but he is one of the candidates that Everton are seemingly talking to.

Bad news for Nuno

If the Toffees hierarchy do have a genuine interest in Conte then it should be bad news for all of the fellow candidates, including Santo.

That’s because the former Inter Milan boss has one of the best CVs in the modern game.

Bill Kenwright wanted to hire David Moyes but after he penned new terms at West Ham, it’s Conte who should be the best viable candidate for the Merseyside outfit.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-and-transfer-news-ancelotti-moshiri-fonseca-howe-moyes” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

The 51-year-old recently won Serie A with Inter Milan and has enjoyed enormous success in England previously. His meticulous style and flexibility in terms of tactics really came across as he engineered a Premier league title win and an FA Cup victory.

When Conte first came to Chelsea, he endured a mixed period. They lost to Liverpool and were then battered by Arsenal using 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1 formations.

However, he changed the formation to a three-man defence, a tweak that would eventually see them win the title. It was a turning point for the entire division as a number of sides looked towards a similar defensive shape.

Nuno is well versed with a three-man defence as well but his flexibility isn’t as seamless as Conte’s.

Wolves were promoted with a three-back but once the Portuguese attempted to make them more attacking with a four-man backline, things didn’t go to plan.

Wolves kept just two clean sheets in 14 league matches from October to January as the four-man backline ended up costing the Old Gold.

Conte’s accomplishments speak for themselves but in the words of Pep Guardiola, the 51-year-old is a “tactical master.”

There should only really be one candidate in mind here for Farhad Moshiri and co and if Santo’s stalling opens the door for Everton to hire Conte, then he’ll only have himself to blame if he finds himself not managing in the Premier League next season.

AND in other news, Major twist emerges in Everton manager hunt, Kenwright will be buzzing…
